I have been researching non-stop for the past few days and have basically narrowed things down to exactly what is needed. Had a look at the mobo and even the CPU back plate is easily removable to that will be easy. Now ts is a question of the money...

yeah its definitely alot of money just for braggin' rights. even if it doesn't work out you'll can prolly use it to build a sweet water cooled desktop.
but fingers crossed, hoping you actually get this to work, its just too cool.

Hey guys, after few days I had time to go back to my machine and do some benchmarks.

    3D Mark 11 -- P3623

I have my card undervolted to 1.05V. 770/970Mhz seems stable running at this voltage. No throttling either :D

However when running Vantage I still get the shutdowns even undervolting to 1V and running at stock. Weird...

Sounds good Inap, kinda lonely at the top of all 3 categories ;) It'd be kinda nice to have a good reason to bench the rig again, my wife gets irritated if I bench when I'm already in the lead lol.

Nice run Migualo, part of the reason you're crashing in Vantage may be the undervolt. If you ask any of the heavy benchers on here like Inap, Rev, etc you have to overvolt to get good scores at high clocks in Vantage.

Hey, what I just realised... you have the 900p screen. I'm not sure whether this affects the score. Or did you use an external monitor?

Since I just flashed my 6970m unusable I'm back to the 260m at the moment... but even with higher clocks I can hardly reach your score. Either it's because something's wrong with my system or because the 900p screen has an influence, I'm not sure about this. Never used vantage on a 900p screen myself.

Anyway, here's my sad score... with the GTX 260m. I want my 6970m to be working again...

the native res doesn't factor into the score AFAIK, you run the tests @1280x768 regardless of your native resolution. i do however run all my benches on an OLD sharp 31" Plasma from when plasma screens were still like $5k..lol ....your overall is higher than mine though im sure with the 920 your 3d06 will kill mine =(

Im sure there is nothing wrong with your system im just that good with crap specs =P.... its all about tweaking and finding sweet spots, etc etc

im somewhat apprehensive to flash the bios, if you don't mind could you pm your process, like i said before ive flashed ATI cards literally 1000s of time but never a Nvidia card and im weary of the software. but if you dont mind helpin..... =)

i don't change it, so its what ever vantage /06 sets it too. i assumed it was 1280x768, which was a mistake, ill take a pic with the resolution listed if necessary.

    EDIT: Vantage defaults to 1280x1024 & 3d06 to 1280x800

Yeah I think Vantage uses 1280x1024 regardless of your screen res it just scales up or down. Your GPU still renders the correct size for all.

Cool, in this case I have to investigate a bit to see why I got lower scores.
    Nice run!!!

I flashed it with a modified version of a beta vbios, which apparently wasn't a good idea, system didn't post anymore and gave me the code for "GPU is preventing system from posting".
So yes, as long as I can't find a way to flash it somehow it's a brick. Really sucks. Since it won't POST I can't blind flash the card.

If I run Furmark on my HDTV through display port I get an average of 20 fps more than on my laptop screen, even though I am running both on the same resolution and the TV is 1080P.

I didnt do any bench on my TV but will give it a try to see if it makes a difference...

i did the last two runs on the laptop alone. and got 7351 &7371.im pretty sure it doesn't make a difference, since my scores were consistent to my clocks & specs. but it would be interesting to see if it makes a difference using the display port, ive never used it and ive always been under the impression it didn't matter at all, which is usually backed up by my scores.

After watching and learning from your experiences with the 6970M, I decided to join the party. Working great so far. First run of 3dMark11 at stock clocks returned P3513, a nice boost over the 5850M. First real overclock run was P4108. It will be interesting to see how much further it can go, but I'm being conservative until I get a better feel for the dynamics.

How can I only get scores around P3200 using my GPU on stock and P3600 overclocked and you get and average of 400 points more??? Do you do any trick/specific setup to get higher scores?

It's a Dell card I bought on eBay using a link you supplied. Odd thing was that the vbios was dated the day before (12/13/10) the R3 vbios posted by Inap and had an earlier number, which you can see on my earlier post. I have now flashed to the current R3 vbios. +Rep (when allowed)

Here's an updated run at P4205. At this point, I have no idea how that compares to other people's scores using the 6970M, but assume I'm chasing svl7 and widezu69, probably others.

    3dMark11 -- P4205 (6970M)

There can be many reasons for differences between scores on different computers. You need to direct me to the screenshots of your 3dMark11 run at stock clocks, and I'll compare the segment differences, which may give some idea. More than likely, it's just driver setting adjustments. Once you start overclocking, the variables expand. Based on very limited experience, it is clear that power budget management is the key to high performance, particularly if you have a 920/940xm. There's not enough power to run both at their limits, so the key is finding the most efficient balance. I'm just beginning with this setup and know very little about this 6970M at this stage. As I learn more, I will be better able to discuss these issues.

The only thing I have tried at this point is a few runs of 3dMark11, no games yet. I see throttling two ways. First, if you run a benchmark program a few times, you quickly become familiar with the FPS at different stages in the tests, and you can clearly see the slowdown as it occurs. The more reliable and scientific method is to run GPU-Z and Throttlestop logs during the benchmark test or game, which will reveal any GPU or CPU throttling respectively. I have seen plenty of GPU throttling, but relatively little CPU slowdown so far, and both have clearly been power throttling/starvation. Again, I'm no expert. Everyone in this forum has more experience with the 6970M than I do.

Hey, Inap. Got any tips for using/benching these 6970M's? I'm a rank newbie in this particular sandbox, but it is a kick up from the 5850M. Sure going to miss that 5850m; it was easy to live with and could go when called on. Sort of like the ideal woman. LOL.

Hey, Dane, my friend. I'm going to enjoy this new card, but there is no way to run up there with you top guns in the R3's. Those Sandy Bridge 2820's are too much for our little 920xm's. I think you got more power too. I've got a 240W PSU, but I can't use the extra power in the M15x.

Be great to see an update. No longer have much idea what the leading scores are. Haven't tried a Vantage run yet, but maybe I can do a quick one to serve as a placeholder until I learn how to use this 6970m. Thanks. Maintaining those scores is a big job. +Rep +Rep for all your trouble.

i don't know what knid of tips to gave you since your already kicking some butt.

i don't know why but i only like doing vantage runs, hahahah

btw what driver are u using rev. the 11.6 isn't stable for me for some reason especially when running 2 monitors.

Finally got a Vantage run in. Big jump from the 5850M, but way behind the 6970m crowd. Should be fun to try to catch up, at least a little, but it will have to come later. Maybe this will be enough for Dane to let me on the early board.

    3dMark Vantage -- P15,056 (6970m/920xm)

I'm having a little trouble with the 11.6's too under heavy stress. I'm also having a weird problem with TriXX in Vantage. When it starts initially, I can set the clocks as desired, but if I run a bench and then reload TriXX and try to change clocks, it freezes up -- both TriXX and Vantage. Don't know if it's TriXX or Vantage or something else entirely that causes the result, but it's a pain. I need OverDrive. Maybe there's a registry hack or a workaround. Might try Afterburner. Gotta have something that can change clocks quickly and easily. Are you seeing any similar behavior. Could be my setup has gotten whacked, but I'm not in the mood to reinstall Windows right now.

That's awesome Rev, you're rig isn't far off of the R3's I'm currently the leader on all 3 benches but not by much. If I remember right my highest scores are about 4450 in 11, 16200 in Vantage, and 22500 in 06. You're really not far off of that especially if you could take advantage of a larger PSU. Great runs man!

A Dell card, excellent, in this case it was a pretty good deal (imo), that was the cheapest Dell 6970m I've ever seen for sale online so far, I would've got it myself if I hadn't already had my card. (Lol, I guess this conditional sucks grammatically, but I can't remember all the rules :D)
I'm looking forward to seeing your future scores, the Hynix RAM seems to be able to run faster than the Samsung modules on the non-Dell cards, and the core apparently can be pushed harder as well.
The most important thing while pushing the system is of course to keep it cool enough...

I noticed weird performance in all 3dMark tests once in a while, I was able to solve a lot of the problems by simply reinstalling the software. Maybe the .net framework updates mess things up sometimes, I'm not sure, just a guess. I had to install an earlier version of vantage to make it work.

Haven't noticed this so far... but if you need overdrive, try the Clevo vbios. It enables overdrive (at least in my case) I guess the Clevo vbios should work as well on your card. (But don't mess with the beta ES vbios, lol :D)
15k Vantage is a fantastic start!!!

LOL, it's not much of a competition with the SB cpu's and larger PSU on the R3. Shoot my standard OC's probably match the heavy OC's of the M15x. I wish there was more benching on the R3's too but I don't see it happening. Guess it's just you and I pushing the limits and frying cards again man.

Great run, Migualo. You don't need any help, that's for sure.

OK, Inap. Tried your 850 core, took me on up to P15,353. Making progress, but it's going to take some more experimenting.

Thanks Rev. Most of what I learned about upgrading, overclocking and benchmarking was through the comments on this forum. You are all doing a great job.

And to celebrate check my new score... :) I'm getting there, closer and closer to my mentors :p

Very nice. I think maybe the benching bug is about to claim another victim. LOL. Welcome to the ward. Most of us learned all we know about the subject(s) right here in these forums.

Ok guys, you now have the well overdue update to the scores on the first page! If I missed anything or messed up PM me and I'll look at it, if you do PM me for an edit on an existing or new score be sure to include all of the info requested. There were still a few unverifiable scores due to not having all required info in an actual screenshot. I need the screenshot to be readable as well. Thanks for being patient, follow the simple requests on page one and I give you my word an update will be done every 2 weeks or less. Now get spilling that bench blood guys! ;) :D Awesome scores and some great accomplishments since the last update.

Edit: I've also decided to add an SSD/HDD bench section to give you guys something new to toy with for top spots, let me know what you guys would like to see in that section and I'll add it from 6/24/2011 on. Also if you'd like to see any other categories let me know via PM.

Now start benching those machines guys, there are still some good spots available :D More 6970m benches are needed, and some of the older scores should be possible to beat as well!!
