I am not 100% convinced but I am convinced enough to add this new HDC feature to ThrottleStop. If a lot of people come to this forum and thank me, I will send them your way. You can sit back and glow in the positive feedback. Maybe rack up some +reps. :D

Thanks for pointing out the temperature discrepancy. I can explain. The temperature number you circled on the main TS screen is a reading of the package temperature. This temperature includes all of the individual cores plus the iGPU plus a few more temperature sensors scattered about the CPU package. This should always represent the peak temperature anywhere within the CPU package.

The number in the task bar looks to be only the peak core temperature. When fully loaded, these two numbers are usually the same since the hottest temperature coming from anywhere on the CPU package is usually at a hot spot on one of the cores. When idle, the hottest core temperature is usually less than the peak package temperature. In the next TS version, I will change this so the two numbers should report the same CPU package temperature.

We really cannot tell for sure. Sometimes in life, you just have to believe! Hopefully the next version of TS will let you toggle HDC on and off without crashing your computer and you will be able to do your own testing to see if your idle or load temps are improved any.

No Intel DPTF settings to be found anywhere on my laptop... locked BIOS. Not even in devmgmt.msc.

HDC was enabled by default on my system - I checked in RW-Everything MSR. I tried disabling it, and it did not have any effect on my system.
    upload_2018-10-10_13-51-13.png

The setting says that HDC is disabled even though MSR says its enabled. No plans for an unlocked BIOS here. :( Battery life is better than I need it to do atm - 9-12hrs on a single charge here at school.

Something really weird is happening for me, speedshift is already enabled for me in throttlestop. I dont have to select "start speedshift with computer startup". This was with a clean installation of throttlestop on a clean windows. How is this possible on my alienware 17 r3?

I've the same issue, pressing Win+shift+s to screen snip causes CPU to use 4-7W so I used snipping tool in background to capture correct low wattage on battery. HDC BTW, is enabled on battery only. On AC its disabled by default.

Thank you  and Thank you for taking your time & clearing up confusion that I have :)

I guess Intel DPTF is disabled by default on your BIOS  He got the same problem too http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-throttlestop-guide.531329/page-905#post-10807029 the problem is sometimes OEM disable Intel DPTF option on the BOIS & they hide this option from you...
    as I said before...
but battery life is pretty good ;) so you are not into position of needing it really :) but imagine if you got HDC enabled.... oh man..you can go over 12hrs easily

Newer versions of Windows 10 enable Speed Shift automatically. If you want Windows to manage the Speed Shift EPP value, do not put a check mark in the ThrottleStop Speed Shift - EPP box. Never a good idea to have two different programs trying to mange the same thing.

I use the Print Screen key on the keyboard. You can also use ALT + Print Screen if you only want a snapshot of the window that is currently open and highlighted. This method takes a snapshot before the Watts goes up. After that you can Paste the image from the Clipboard into Paint or into whatever program you like.

I'm a long time lurker of these forums and I'm happy to see that people are starting to realize that DPTF by itself is not the throttling devil that some people think it is.

I have an XPS 9550 and for years people have recommended to disable DPTF to "fix" throttling, however doing this caused clock modulation throttling after a short period of time on high load tasks.
And that kind of throttling is MUCH worse than the frequency/voltage throttling that happens when DPTF is enabled (I've never seen clock modulation going below 100% with DPTF), but everybody knows what frequency is so they just look at those numbers while ignoring clock modulation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

With that said I can understand that some implementations of DPTF can be pretty crappy as it comes down to the vendor to adjust all the settings DPTF has ( and there are a lot), but at least in my case DPTF does a good job at what it is supposed to do, controlling thermals with a low performance impact.

is there a way to make this run at startup without the extra steps? Like MSI afterburner allows with a check box.

I force people to use the Task Scheduler on purpose. It helps weed out people that have no idea what they are doing. Learning about the Task Scheduler is also a good skill to learn.

I do have some code available that I might add to TS in a month or two that will let users add ThrottleStop to their startup sequence with one click. Very few people have asked for this feature so I am still debating whether to do this or not. It might cause problems for users that undervolt their CPU based on what someone said in a forum and not on any hands on testing. When undervolting, it is very easy to get your computer stuck in a BSOD loop if you have not thoroughly tested your new settings. Users that cannot follow the Task Scheduler Guide might have a lot of trouble fixing this problem. ThrottleStop will get the blame.

What about show the option once TS has been opened X times, or ran for X minutes/hours ? Or having to write some text on the config file, like MSI Afterburner

Personally I'm fine with using Task Scheduler, and tend to agree if people struggle setting up TS to autostart with this method, they may end up with bigger issues to deal with. For me there's also advantage in being able to delay TS a couple of minutes.

With massive/maxed undervolt (as many does) you eating up all the voltage headroom Intel has given their chips. Chips can degrade after long time use and in the end you will lack needed voltage to boot up. Boot loops ain’t nice for people who can’t fix it themselves. In the end I’m sure ThrottleStop will get the blame.

    You can try this script:
    Code:
    schtasks /Create /SC ONLOGON /TN ThrottleStop /TR D:\Backup\ThrottleStop\Ts.exe /RL HIGHEST
You have to copy correct path and you must open Taskscheduler HUI to uncheck to Stop Task on battery. That's the only drawback.
To remove the task use this code:
    Code:
    schtasks /Delete /TN ThrottleStop /F
Do note /TN aka Task name must be same.

Hello guys I need help with throttlestop, I just bought my acer swift 3 (i5 8250U + mx150), after few days use I have a problem fps drop when playing dota 2, fps become unstable after playing about 20min, after searching for a solution I realize my problem is cpu throttling, so I install throttlestop.

But it looks like throttlestop don't work on my swift because after I'm using it the problem is not solved, after playing about 20min fps still unstable, my cpu downclocking to 1000mhz, I've tried undervolt my cpu, but the temperature is the same like before, max 85-90°C

do you guys have any solution for me? :(

Actually, I do not encourage providing the startup option. Account to the posts in here, I can imagine there are many novices who got stuck with it.

I am using the simple method by adding TS(just the path+filename) in the "Run" key in the registry. In my view, if you are not novices, it should be easier to add TS in Task Scheduler. :)

Oh.. Acer :( :(, the first thing, if you can, you try to change the better thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink(heatpipe). After that, going on the undervolt, PL1/PL2 setting. However, I personally believe that the PL1 and PL2 machine may had been locked by Acer in order to avoid getting failure due to the high temperature by the CPU(because of the cheap heat dissipation solution). Thus, you can follow the guide in this thread to try it is OK or not. Good luck.

His virtual core temps are not higher.
    The "MAX" was 92C+.
The current temps are in line with the reading at the bottom right.
    there is no problem here.

No need to worry. The much hated ThrottleStop expiry date has been permanently removed. TS 8.70, TS 8.60 and TS 8.50 that is included within the TS 8.60 download, all have no expiry date.

@demonwalker - Your maximum temperatures from core to core are not very consistent. This might be a sign of a cheap / warped or poorly installed heatsink. If it was my laptop, I would pull it apart for a closer look.

In the FIVR window there is an option called Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limits. I would click on the Install button, follow the directions and make sure this option is checked. On the main screen, do not check BD PROCHOT. For maximum performance when gaming, set the Speed Shift SST variable to 0. Now check the Log File option and go play a game. When you are finished playing, exit ThrottleStop and look in the Logs directory for a record of your CPU's performance. Copy and Paste that data to www.pastebin.com or a similar site or upload the log file somewhere so I can download it and have a look.

That is never a bad idea but do some Google research first. Are other users having problems with the bios version you are using or with the newest bios version? Some manufacturers go backwards and make things worse with newer bios updates.

@FrozenLord - Have a look at the picture I posted. I am curious about all of the registers after that register. In RWEverything you have to click on the User tab and add them one by one. 0xDB0, 0xDB1, 0xDB2, 0x652, 0x653, 0x655, 0x656. No need to add the proper names.

You might want to sit back and wait though. I have already started adding this feature to TS but it might be a day or two or three before it is finished. My 4th Gen Haswell shows the new HDC option as grayed out because it does not support this feature.

I have seen that option somewhere? Isn't that DPTF feature set? I think there was an option called acoustics or performance mode, i can't remember what exactly was it called?
Is it possible to tweak spread frequency of BCLK to 100% using TS? I always see 99.76MHz instead of 100MHz.

You mean the 1C temp difference between physical and logical core?
I get that all the time.
The differences between main cores is excessive, yes, but we all know that's standard fare now for bad repastes or heatsink balance.

No. ThrottleStop has no ability to change the BCLK.

HDC might be part of DPTF on some laptops. In ThrottleStop, HDC is an experimental feature so a user can try enabling HDC without having to install DPTF. Some manufacturers might know how to setup and use the DPTF driver appropriately while other manufacturers do not.

Not sure what you are looking at. The first 2 threads belong to the first core, the next 2 threads belong to the next core, etc. The four different cores have wide temperature variation but thread to thread within the same core are identical or close to it.

Current temps are fine it's just that max temps were way way off than usual. 92C on hottest core and 72C on coldest core.

Yes, there is a large variation from core to core.

That statement does not make sense. Within each individual core there are 2 threads. His picture that shows the maximum temperatures shows that both threads within each core are very consistent with each other; the same temp or within 1°C.

So its okay if HTT cores report high temps? This was original picture. I think the first 4 rows correspond to actual physical cores and rest are HTT cores, right?

@FrozenLord - Thanks for the pic. It shows 0xDB0 is set to 0 which means HDC is not enabled. You can try setting that MSR to 1 and see if it makes any difference. Perhaps slightly more core C state (C6 or C7) residency time or slightly lower idle temps. If you see any change, go back and disable HDC by setting 0xDB0 back to zero to try and prove that this adjustment was a good thing.

Wrong. Some CPUs and some operating systems might have the first 4 threads displayed by ThrottleStop belonging to the first 4 cores and then the next 4 threads might be the hyperthreads but it does not look like that in this screenshot. The first two threads belong to the first core, the next two threads to the next core, etc., etc. This is the most common orientation in recent operating systems.

The OS can arrange these however it likes. In XP there were times when the threads were randomly distributed. The first displayed thread belonged to the first core but after that, it was open season with the rest of the threads randomly distributed. I have not see any screenshots like that in years.

Anyway, back on topic. Crappy cooler or crappy paste job. If I had the time I would try to fix that first and if I did not have the time, I would play with ThrottleStop to see if it could make a bad situation more tolerable. I hope to see a log file so I can make some more suggestions if needed.

    As @unclewebb said, its core 0,1 (Logical core 0), core 2,3 ( logical core 2), core 4,5, 6,7.
    Physical Logical like that.

    Even on i7 2600K it's like that.
Even in Prime95 threads, its the exact same. Physical/logical, physical/logical.

Should be shown with more detail in HWinfo64 but throttlestop doesn't need to do that. Light and simple for the win.

hello @unclewebb thanks for the help, i've doing whats your suggestion before
    -copy RwDrv.sys to throttlestop folder
-check disable and lock turbo power limits
    -uncheck BD ProcHot
    -set speed shift to 0
    -check log file option

and then im try playing dota2 for 1hr 30min, cpu frequency stable from 2500-3000mhz no downclocking like before, temps at 82-90C, but i cant find the log file in TS folder, am i doing something wrong?

is it safe to run cpu on 80-90C ?
can i set turbo boost frequency to 2000-2500mhz? because i think it's will decrease some temps if i lower the turbo boost frequncy :notworthy:
thanks before you really helping me

so this is screenshot after play dota for 30min, still i cant find the log file

You should repaste your laptop with a high viscosity thermal paste. One that isnt that expensive and good, is Gelid GC extreme.

Probably. Did you look in the ThrottleStop folder for a folder called Logs? In the Logs folder there should be a log file in there with today's date on it. Hopefully you can find the log file. Lots of useful info in there.

Intel says that the "maximum safe operating temperature" is 100°C. Any temperature below that is perfectly safe. Any temperature above that temperature is not safe. This applies to the vast majority of Intel CPUs sold during the last decade.

You could but why would you? Intel wants you to experience maximum performance. Your CPU is well designed and will protect itself from any damage. Intel is not the problem. It is all of these laptop manufacturers that seem to have gone soft on performance so grandma's lap does not get too hot.

I would click on the FIVR button and try raising the CPU Core IccMax value. Bump it up significantly and see if the EDP Other throttling goes away.

For PL1 and PL2, open up the TPL window and have a look. If those values are adjustable, try bumping them up a little. Post a screenshot of the TPL window if you need some help. Click on the headings in Limit Reasons to clear the previous throttling reasons. Go play some more and then see if these light up again. A yellow box shows that some throttling took place. A log file will show if the amount of throttling is significant or not.

@unclewebb do you or anyone else that frequents this forum/thread have any tips on how to trim the remaining fat from my Windows 10 installation? I can't seem to get better than 70% C7 package state at idle.

I spent the better part of today re-optimizing my system again since my last major Windows update to 1803 that reset all my old customized settings back to stock. After sifting through all my services again I've got my idle processes down to around 120 total.

I'm really not sure what else I can safely trim or eliminate? (I will have to provide screens tomorrow. I'm done for today.) I've also got some random errors and warnings cropping up in my event viewer I'm not sure where to start tracking down also.

Other than that though, my system actually runs great and idles at 1-2% CPU usage. It's just the little details that get under my skin.

That is not too bad. What are the cores averaging when idle? I can get about 98% to 99% in core C7 with 0.5% or less in the C0 state.

What antivirus program are you using? I still like Avast but that is only after I turn off the majority of its new and improved features. Some antivirus programs will keep the cores more active than they need to be. It also could just be one poorly written driver. Very common. Manufacturers are not great at shipping systems that are squeaky clean from bloated or inefficient software. After you turn off a few things, Windows 10 by itself is excellent. Keep searching. Maybe you will see something. The Resource Monitor will show you tasks arranged by CPU usage.

yeah i want to repaste it, but it will void my warranty, i dont think acer service center can help me to, 5 days ago i upgrade ssd & let them to opening this laptop, do you know what they do after putting ssd on this laptop?
they installed pirated windows on ssd & let the original one on hdd, i ask them why you dont clone or migrate my windows to ssd, they say they cant do that, my next question is how long have you working in here? the answer really make me shock "11 years"
i've googling about liquid metal, the temp decrease really significant, do you think that is a better option?

no there is no new file or folder created in my TS folder

yeah i think laptop manufactures makes this laptop airflow very bad, i have a msi ge62vr to, the airflow is very good, 2 years using it until now never experince throttling when playing games, but i cant complaint so much because the difference of the price of this 2 laptop :D

hello @unclewebb do you have any suggestion what setting i need to change to decrease my temps? :)
or im good to go with this setting & temps?

EWW NO APPLE DESIGN EXHAUST UNDERNEATH DISPLAY HINGE. I have it on my Mi Notebook Pro. I can't understand it.

I will have to say, your laptop, (if I backread correctly is a 8250U+MX150) has a cooling 'solution' that is amongst the worst I have seen in any laptop to come. I have the same CPU+GPU combo - but with two exhausts and fans. I've had the 6500U+945M and 6200U+920M paired on one heatsink and one exhaust and the temps got to 80C+. But with your display hinge blocking up to 50% of the exhaust? It's no wonder your CPU temps are 92C. Liquid Metal would barely solve your issue. Just go for good quality Thermal paste.

Acer warranty is hopeless. Just repaste with normal paste, don't worry with the "warranty" Unless you remove any stickers Acer won't care. Just play innocent if something went wrong. If Acer is going to pirate windows, be a dirty customer back to them if you make a mistake. "My computer wouldn't turn on today. Can you help me?"

Also, that is a nefarious undervolt. -50mV only on an 8250U? I'd at least expect -100mV. Unlucky you. Your laptop seems to be the epitome of great hardware and value crippled by a pathetic cooling system.

TLDR: What. Is. That. Thermal. Design. Return it.

Removing what is causing the throttling of a CPU is fun, especially with "15W" 8th gen U CPUs which can guzzle up to 50W. I love unlocking power limits on really poorly-designed laptops, forcing the CPU up to 99C and hearing the puny fan (yes, singular) scream to 100%*Cackles evilly*. P.S. Dell XPS w/ 8550U is my fav. Temps instantnly shoot to 90C but the fun is ruined when VRM throttling kicks in a few seconds later. :(

Thanks unclewebb and Falkentyne. So I have a doubt, can I sort actual and virtual cores by sorting using c0%?
Okay I disabled steepstep in BIOS and I get random stutters when external mouse is used but I didn't see 800MHz bug on RS4, looks like MSFT shipped HWP driver that bypass OS-pstate driver on skylake and above CPUs. One more thing, I see my C-state switched from C7 to C6 after EIST was disabled in BIOS.

    I think I shared a custom RS4 and RS5 ISO with you.
