I loved the 8740w KB and absolutely hated when HP went chiclet style. IMHO, they should have stayed with the old KB - one of the very best found in laptops, ever. The new one is ok but it doesn't feel solid and lacks some tactile feedback. 80/100 is what I'd give it. The Dell has a better KB, - 85-90/100.

Can't comment on the trackpad, I only use trackpoints.

I think they both have spill-resistant KB's but it's a gimmick anyway, can only protect against very minor spills. Sound quality is mediocre in both.

There are also 2012 docking stations needed for the 8770w.

Or can you still use the 2010 docking stations (8740w and 8760w) but not all the features? (I think display port specification of the 8770w is now 1.2 e.g. which would not work with older docking stations)

Random question for the forums gurus...

Just found out that Eurocom is throwing in the Quadro k5000m into their laptops. How fares the Neptune 2.0 to the HP 8770w or the Dell m6700? In terms of price, they look very good. But I'm looking at build quality and monitor color gamut (thinking Dream Color) as well.

    Any opinions?

Clevo laptops have lower price but lack next business day support as well as features and build quality, when compared to the Elitebook and Precisions. I'd never consider a Clevo/Sager system as a mobile workstation.

I'll wait 4 days and compare the price before deciding.

As you guys might already know. The Firepro M6000 is confirmed (Owner manual leaked!) for the Precision M6700. It appears to be a 128-bit card though, more info in the Precision forum. Good luck with your decision.

Raw performance should be similar. Not sure about pro applications but the FirePro is certainly less expensive by at least 200-300$. I'd probably go with the M6000 and upgrade to a more powerful GPU down the road. Quite positive, the 7970m can be landed there, some M6600 owners managed to do that already.

I'm still hoping to see a more powerful FirePro (based on the 7970M) this year. In fact, I might just grab a 8770w or M6600 and put a 7970M in it. Paying 2k for the K5000M doesn't seem like a great idea to me.

Yup, going for a M6700. mSATA port is SATA3! Also, the build quality seems to be higher than the last gen, slight improvements on ports access, stronger hinges and the lid opens over 180 degrees. Same IPS RGBLED screen, same great cooling.

Hi Dirtnap, why are you getting the 8770w? and what config are you getting on it?
I am trying to get either an M6700 or an Elitebook 8770w but man these two laptops are so expensive when configured with a 32GB of RAM...

    Sup.

I going to used the 8770w for graphic designing and photography.... IMO the elitebook has a better IPS screen and Touchhpad than the dell precision and cheaper with the 28% discount(I think) than the m6700.

I'm waiting on the quadros(K3000m,K4000m,K5000m) to be available for the 8770w before I make my order. if the quadros are not available, then.......

    FreeDOS

    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3720QM Processor, 2.60GHz (Turbo up to 3.60GHz), 1600 MHz, 6MB L3 Cache

17.3 inch LED DreamColor FHD UWVA Anti-Glare enabled for Webcam (1920x1080)

    WEBCAM Integrated 720p HD

ATI FirePro M4000 graphics with 1GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory

    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 1DM Memory

320 GB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive

Blu-ray ROM DVD±RW SuperMulti DL Drive

Dualpoint (Touchpad and Pointstick) Backlit Keyboard

HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth® 4.0 Wireless Technology

    Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300

    Integrated Fingerprint Reader

    200W Hardware Kit

HP Long Life 8-Cell 75 Wh Li-lon Battery (3 year warranty)

3-year standard parts and labor warranty 3/3/3.

Drivers for SUSE Linux Enterprise Distribution (Recovery Media)

    1 Express Card/54

    1 Smart Card Reader

    1 SD/MMC

Both hp and dell ram is expensive, so I recommend not buying the ram and ssd from them.

Nothing much man, just feverishly looking for a good laptop for work.
I am pretty much going to use it for the same things plus heavy video editing and 3d animation so basically pro apps. I would love to get that 28% discount too! :)

Almost what I had in mind except I would get these instead:

    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3920XM Processor, 2.90GHz (Turbo up to 3.80GHz), 1600 MHz, 8MB L3 Cache

A better video card, more memory than 1GB (will be doing heavy rendering and After Effects works etc...)

750 GB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive
    750GB 7200RPM 2nd Hard Drive

and 32GB of RAM, but as you said, I can get them separately along with an ssd drive.

Just three weeks ago, I thought I had an unlimited budget (unlimited being 5 K max that is...hey I haven't been in the laptop market for 5 yrs at least) but I will have to cut it down as other expenses are on the horizon for me so I would say between 3000$-3500$. The setup I built roughly amounts to 4900$ and with a potential 28% it will bring it down to 3500$ which would be PERFECT....provided I get the 28% off haha
Oh and of course, I would have to wait maybe for a better card (unless I am told it is good enough for my needs)...

Do you really need i7-3920XM Processor? the 3920xm is sightly better than the 3720QM and 3820QM.

It's very possible to get the 28% discount, just ask around in the 8740w/8706w owner lounge.

    Hi everyone,

I'm following this thread with interest, since I'm looking to replace my 8530w with one of the new Elitebooks (either the 8770w or the 8570w).

I'm from Italy, but I would like to purchase the laptop from US. The new laptops are not available here yet, but I expect the price to be slightly less than in Italy, even considering the additional cost for shipment and the European taxation. But the big advantage for me is that purchasing from US I can customize my order as I like (HP Italy only allows the purchase of pre-configured models, which usually are average configurations).

There is only one issue for me (and the reason for my post) : the laptop which would come from US would have an US keyboard. Probably it is not such a big thing, I guess I could get used to its layout with time. But I also use a desktop, and sometimes an older laptop at work, and they both have an Italian keyboard, so the constant swap could get annoying.

So I was wondering if anybody had previous experience of changing the keyboard layout on the Elitebooks : I guess it could be possible to purchase a spare keyboard separately and replace the existing one?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice

You can buy a keyboard in Italy and swap, it's very easy, just follow the manual.

The aesthetic of the EliteBooks is nice, but AFAIK there is no Optimus support, and the non-IPS displays are too dim according to the specs—probably the same awful panels that seem to infest business-class laptops these days. Add to that HP's recent crises, which don't inspire trust in the company.

IIRC, I ordered an EliteBook 8740w some time ago. HP held the order for over a month, then canceled the order without asking me. I bought a Lenovo W510 instead.

Mark Hurd scandal, Leo Apotheker ouster, Palm failure, consideration of exiting the PC business, declining revenue, big layoffs. Lots of little red flags.

None of those factors means anything specific for the EliteBooks. It's more of a "where there's smoke, there's fire" thing. It raises the bar a little for what qualifies as a compelling set of features. The 8x70w models just don't have it. Give me Optimus and better non-IPS panels, and we'll talk. I still think the EliteBooks have the best aesthetics of any business-class machine.

As for Lenovo, well, they lost me with the new keyboard layout. But that's clearly a discussion for another thread.

    Yeah, that's true.

My next laptop will either be the elitebook 8770w or the Precision m6700. The lack of info regarding the 8770w (when will the Quadro k5000m,k4000m,k3000m will be avaible for the 8770w,No good reviews, your posts) and hearing nothing but bad things about HP's business-class customer service. I'm starting to believe that I will be better off buying the m6700.

8570W has an MSATA slot. Some SmartBuy models use the MSATA slot for a factory-installed 24GB SSD with a hidden partition containing the operating system. Other models, including CTO seem to have an empty MSATA slot. Does anyone know if the MSATA slot is available for user-installable third party SSD modules.. Or is the MSATA slot reserved for HP-installations only?

    Best, Aloysius

    To think I get 12293 points on 3DMark 2006 with my 2-years-old 8740w and its M7820... :(
I guess I'll have to wait for a better FirePro to be available on the 8770w or go for the K3000M.
