    EC blank insert missing?

My E4200 does not come with a blank insert for the EC (Express Card) slot. Do the new E4200's have the insert in place? Thanks.

    I bought a refurb E4200 (USA).

    * It did not come with a folio/sleeve
    * It was spec'ed with 1GB RAM and it arrived with 1GB RAM (no bonus SODIMM! I installed a 2GB SODIMM)
    * It does have a blank insert for the EC slot

    Broadcom USH Driver

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Build 7077x64. Everything is automatically installed except for the Broadcom USH which shows up with an exclamation mark in Device Manager. I tried the control vault driver, and security manager, but they both fail to install in Win7. Does anyone have idea where I can find the 64 bit driver for it? I do not have fingerprint reader, so I think I need only the Smart Card driver. Thanks.

Do you actually use the SmartCard? If you don't, you should just disable it. However, I think the USH driver may be needed to communicate with the TPM. The TPM can be disabled as well, though.

Edit: You may want to install the USH x64 binary in compatibility mode. Did you try it with Vista-compatibility?

I don't need the SC card capability, and I don't have a fingerprint reader. I can leave that uninstalled, I guess. Checking the various forums, I need to install the Dell Security manager driver, but for some reason it does not install in Windows 7. I have not tried using Vista compatibility mode yet.

That's strange about the RAM. My system is spec'ed with 2GB RAM, and it comes with 3GB. I thought that the spec they give at the Outlet store is for the amount of RAM in the DIMM slot, so you can add 1GB to that.

I think they display the capacity of the second DIMM, but if that is 0, then they just give the soldered-in memory. I.e., 1GB can either mean 1GB or 2GB, but 2GB always means 3GB. :)

They do the same with the XT, FWIW.

my refurb just came, and my dvd burner was nowhere to be found. Plus, my battery is wonky. Sometimes the system just shuts down the minute I pull the plug. Other times it'll stay on for a bit and then just shut down. I didn't receive a sleeve. Did have a EC insert. Am just a bit peeved overall. Returned a Mini 12 that was just a piece of crap. I've seen Playskool products with better build quality. Read so many good things about the E4200 (along with owning an excellent M1330) that I thought it was a no brainer. Battery issues from the moment I powered it on and the absence of a burner that was listed in the system details and on my receipt just infuriates me on top of the fact that I have to sleep on it till 10am tomorrow when I can reach my XPS support pretty much whenever. I hope this gets solved easily because build, size and weight for this is pretty slick. Far better than what I was expecting. Pretty quick too on the startup. Just wish I didn't have to carry the AC adapter tomorrow.

I'm also peeved that I have 2gb of RAM when I thought I had one. Spent $10 on a gig via ebay that I'll now have to turn around and sell. Sorry, just venting.

The sleeve is something that some retail purchasers have received. Definitely not something for Outlet folks, I didn't get it either (sorry, if I gave the impression that I did). The extra gig of RAM is common enough though. I did have the EC insert. If you ask Dell to send it, they will do so.

chunglau, you do NOT need ANY Dell software unless you are using the functionality. I have disabled ALL of the horrid ControlPoint software and drivers and have run the laptop like this for months. If you have a FP reader, you do need it though.

dbpaddler: I have found that the connector between the AC adapter and the chassis is NOT as reliable as the one on our M1330s (for example). You need to make sure it is snug and ensure that the 'charge' LED is lit and ensure that the battery in charging in windows. You can verify the juice in your battery by pushing the battery check button on the battery itself which lights up the 5 LEDs. I am willing to bet (OK never mind, I will probably lose that wager!) that your battery has not been charged fully. The problem is that all fricking E4200 LEDs are the same color. It looks real cool but provides very little value in terms of visual status. This has happened to me many times, that I have drained the battery and I keep turning the unit on, but the power was connected, the unit showed as connected (AC line) yet the battery didn't charge due to the loose connection (though I thought it did).. You have to push the power supply pin in fully and ensure your battery is charging.

If your battery is fully charged and you are still having an issue, i recommend you call Dell and get a replacement.
