Ambient sensor issue in Windows 7

Is anyone getting the LCD brightness adjustment to work properly in Windows 7? I have build 7077x64. I installed the latest BIOS and the latest Control Point software. If I don't enable Ambient Light Sensor, then I cannot adjust LCD brightness. I then installed the ALS software. Now I could not adjust brightnesss at all. So I uninstalled that. It is annoying to have to turn ALS on before I can adjust brightness.

Just wondering if this is a build 7077 problem or not. On my E6400 with build 7048, I don't have this problem.

Mine is a 12 inch version, but I think an older style (nothing on the outside).

chunglau, as I mentioned, I do not use any CP software at all. I control my LCD brightness through hardware only using the FN+Up Cursor and FN+Down Cursor keys. The FN+Left Cursor combination turns on the ALS. I am assuming you have already tried these combinations? As far as I can tell, these are OS-independent. All CP does is give you visual feedback on your LCD. I don't care about that.

The same goes for my backlit keyboard, if I want to turn it on while it isn't in Windows, I use FN+Right Cursor keys.

If I don't install DCP, there is no on screen display. But the more serious problem is that I still cannot adjust LCD brightness unless I turn ALS on. Not sure if the ALS switch and the brightness switch are totally OS independent or not. I think I may have to reinstall the factory XP image and try that out.

So you have tried the FN-key combination to no avail?

Yes. In Win7, build 7077x64, there is definitely a bug with LCD brightness and ALS control.

I have tried the factory XP Pro image, since I saved that using Acronis. The ALS and the brightness control work correctly. Via the FN+ controls, I can change brightness whether ALS is enabled or not. In Win7, I have to enable ALS in order to change brightness. Using DCP and the Dell ALS utility, the brightness cannot be changed at all, so the ALS utility is really broken in Win7. I'm sure that in Vista everything works fine.

Another inconsistency is that even though there is a BIOS switch to enable/disable ALS, the FN+left-arrow overrides it. So not sure why they bother to put it in the BIOS since it does not stick.
