Cool. Thanks. I will order one of those on eBay today. Looks like it might be thick enough for the battery slice as well.

Thanks for the info. Are you running Vista? FYI, the Dell site shows v6.2.0.6600, A13 as the latest version for Vista.

So I downloaded and ran the XP version driver update. It aborted, saying that I already had the same version installed. So I guess this isn't the problem. :(

I would appreciate if anyone has other ideas for me to try. I really would like to get my Logitech keyboard back up and running... Thanks.

My bad, I didn't realize you were running XP. Yep, I am running the big evil V. Thanks for the info on the new driver, I am about to do another clean install but I am waiting for my 64GB SSD.

If I recall XP SP3 has a built-in Microsoft stack for BT. If you uninstall everything, and reboot, are you left with unidentified devices? If you can precisely ID the Broadcom chip, you can probably download a driver update from another OEM such as HP (I have done that from time to time, for stuff like Upek fingerprint scanners but never tried it for BT).

No worries, appreciate the guidance. I am not that sophisticated... just technically proficient enough to be dangerous! I do believe it is running the built-in Microsoft BT stack (shows "My Bluetooth Places" etc in a Windows Explorer type of presentation). I haven't tried uninstalling the BT drivers though. I will try to see if the chip & any identifying marks are visible after removing the service panel.

 Sometimes the simplest possibility is the one to investigate first. Batteries...

I had changed batteries in the keyboard fairly recently! (but they were some cheapies which I've found to not be that great) The keyboard was working great with my Portege. It seems on that same day when I switched over to the new Dell was when the batteries dropped below acceptable threshold.

Wanted to really be sure it wasn't the keyboard so today I booted up the Portege and lo and behold the keyboard exhibited similar problems. So I pulled out the voltmeter and sure enough, 1.38V. I wondered about the other BT keyboard which wouldn't pair with the Dell but still works fine with my desktop. 1.41V on the batteries. Looks like just on the edge, so maybe not enough juice to pair properly with the Dell but enough to continue working with the Logitech hub on my desktop.

Anyway, put in fresh batteries, and the keyboard works great with my old Portege as always, and it functions properly with the new Dell!

Sorry for the false alarm, thanks for the tips.

ETA: FYI, the bluetooth card is not visible from the bottom access panel. The service manual indicates that you need to remove the keyboard to access it.

No worries, I know what you are saying. Being technical, we look for the most complicated solution. Glad it worked out for you.

Getting a 6 Cell battery on ebay with actual Dell marks on it for less.
Is it okay? Would the battery be good? Has anybody bought any from Ebay?
    Thanks,

The 6 cell battery weighs almost one pound by itself but it makes the notebook last for more than 5 hours! So I have no complaints..

I think this is my 5th serious problem requiring service call on the E4200: spontaneously stopped charging batteries. I have three - non work. The laptop runs fine on power when plugged in - but any charged battery I plug in just runs down and never charges anymore. Did anybody experience this before?
