Any idea about fan speed compared to previous versions?

The fan speeds of the T500 are lower than the T61, but cooling is even better. Also, does the fan stay off for long in battery mode, or is it mostly on (this can be hard to tell if the h/d is noisy)?

    Thanks.

It all depends on your configuration.

If you have a cool setup, like a P-series processor and Intel graphics, the fan will likely often not run at all if the E6500 is like my E6400, and will rarely use the full fan speed. The low speed on my E6400 is completely silent.

For anyone trying to flash their Quadro cards to a GeForce you will notice no performance gains.

A GeForce is actually the "base" model.
A Quadro is a GeForce + Better OpenGL support

This means for a game a GeForce and a Quadro will have identical results.

For something OpenGL based (such as a CAD or 3D rendering program) the Quadro will outdo the GeForce.

For this reason, most people are actually trying to flash their cards to Quadros, not the other way around.

Post #6 explains what happens when you flash.

I need some help in finding the quickest way to reload the OS and software on my E6500.

Typically, I would load the bare OS, download ALL the individual driver files from Dell Support web and manually install them one by one and finally apply SP3 (ie. if for Win XP Pro). Then, I go online and do a complete Windows Update service to get all the current patches etc.

Now, that is a whole crap of work.... I'd like to try VLite as in the link above, but it is still a pain in the butt to download all the individual driver files for the E6500 and slipstream it into the install process.

Is there a simpler way? Or could some kind person on this forum put together the complete and latest E6500 driver files all on one ISO or packed file for installation after a bare bones OS load?

    Thanks in advance.

Wow you are lazy, its just downloading lol. And you should use your service tag to download drivers specific to your system rather than getting some kind person to download more drivers than your system can take.

I re-installed my E6400... you might find it helpful to review my notes. I asked Dell for the device driver order. You can probably substitute your other devices where required. It is a piece of work but it should be easier with my clue sheet.

Yes, I admit. I am lazy. ;) ....especially when you see that list compiled by GKDesigns (see his post above). He had a pretty detailed step-by-step and the amount of driver modules plus noting some that were "superseded" after the original release versions is mind boggling especially for Win XP platform.

Seriously, there must be a smarter way to rebuild the system from ground up.

Thanks GK. I'll definitely use your clue sheet as a reference if I am forced to do it the old fashioned way like you did. I hope you imaged/ghosted after all that work and saved it as your baseline. That way, you didn't have to redo it all over again.

I have no image... yet. I should try to do that, although I intend to move it over to Win7 when ready. Did I read that the backup in Vista Biz can create an image? If anyone can briefly outline that process, I'll do it sooner than later.

Note that my install is Vista Biz x64... be sure to maintain your OS selection on dell.com when downloading drivers. Also, the Webcam patch is found under 'All'. My install has been solid so far... leaving the DCP connection/security stuff disabled has probably helped.

    >>Seriously, there must be a smarter way to rebuild the system from ground up.

I set out to restore a Dell factory image but soon discovered that there was none on my system. Probably just as well since the factory install was suspect. So, Dell thinks the smarter way is the image way... if you have one.

The ground up way does allow you to skip installing stuff you will never use... NIC and modem diagnostics are interesting tools but I have NEVER used them.
