I swapped my Indilinx SSD from my E4300 into an E6410 with an i7 620M and NVS 3100 a few days ago, and I find the 6410 to run cooler than the 4300. I haven't used a 6400 in quite awhile so I can't compare the two, but the 6410 is significantly more comfortable to use on a lap.

I have two questions about the 6410:

    1) Regarding the heat. How is the palmrest / the keyboard? I could probably accept that the underside is warm, but I just hate computers that get appreciably hot on the top.

    2) The Displayport, does it support audio out through a HDMI converter? W/ integrated graphics. I know that this is an issue on the t410. Not sure if it's resolved or not there.

No issues here with any heat on the palmrest/keyboard, on the left where the vent is it gets hot, as well as the bottom left of the underside - however its not as hot as my old inspiron

I have the i5 with integrated graphics

Can somebody confirm if the e6410 uses alps or synaptics for the touchpad? Im really wanting the multitouch features.
I heard synaptics at launch and then alps while reading this thread.

I've noticed no heat issues on the palmrest or even on the bottom really. Although, I don't really stress the processor or graphics all too much other than occasionally watching HD movies. I'm a bit careful to keep the vents clear.

The Displayport does indeed support audio. I use a simple Displayport to HDMI cable that I bought from Amazon. It works very well, automatically detecting when it is connected, extending my desktop, and even rerouting the sound. I don't even have to tweak the resolution. The only problem I've encountered with this setup was when using it once with a off-brand LCD TV (Hotel room on vacation) the sound did not work. Tried tweaking to no avail.

My E6410 specs are i5-540, 4gig ram, NVIDIA 3100, Intel X25-M 160gb. The machine is very fast. Not sure what panel I have, but mines does indeed have a rather limit vertical viewing sweet spot. But, when you are in that sweet spot colors are nice and brightness is great. Screen works very well outdoors even in sunlight. Black levels are just OK especially at higher brightness settings.

Also, I can sadly confirm that Dell's latest graphics drivers (A07 I think) for this machine does indeed break the displayport out option. Reverting back to the previous driver, A06 or the one that Win 7 automatically installs after removing the latest driver, and everything works perfectly again.

Speaking of vent on the left side, do not for any reason accidentally or not, have something to block the vent. I accidentally put my USB floppy there while working on it, and upon next reboot it prompt me that the machine get too hot and ask if I want to run diagnostic.

still struggling with the outlet: no luck with duplicating tabs / opening in new tabs using chrome, ie8, or firefox... this is using three separate systems, two win7x64 and one winXPsp3x32.

despite the struggles with the outlet site, i've placed an order for an m4500... at the outlet, they're quite competitive price-wise with the e6510, with a larger selection available, and better base warranty. i still have until the 23rd, but my e6410 is likely headed back to meet its maker.

I just got the E6410 last night from Dell outlet with the default warranty. Here is the problem, the tiny glass/plastic that is in front of the camera and make it flushed with the LCD bazel is loose. It should be glue to the bazel, but it's not. Personally I don't very care about it that much. And I don't very care about the camera either. But I'm more worry about the dust getting in that way. Should I call Dell and get it taken care of or just tape it over? Other than the look, can dust get in that way and damage LCD?
