I find that it is best to slightly bend the keyboard before installation so that the middle is lower than the sides. Then, after putting it in you need to push down very firmly on the sides of the keyboard so that it is firmly fixed in the chassis. It is a tight fit around the navigation key area.

Installation of the LED cover isn't easy. You start at the left end and get it clipped down while bending it. The right end needs a firm push once it is aligned correctly. The plastic hook is quite fragile and was broken on my E6410 (I got a new part from Dell next day).

If anybody is interested in getting one of these machines working with Fedora 14 (with nVidia graphics), I have written a guide. This should be fairly applicable to most other distros as well.

Linux on my Dell Latitude E6410

Since receiving my E6410 from the outlet I've been very pleased except for the temperatures. Even in a very cool room it idles between 45 - 50C. When barely stressing the CPU (<10%)the temps will jump to ~ 70-75C and upwards from there up to the high 80's and even low 90's under moderate stress (<50%). Do you recommend changing the TIM?

The idle temperature is similar to what I am getting but the temperatures under load look a little high.

    (i) Are you running the latest BIOS?
(ii) Run HWiNFO and report the full load fan speed (should be >4,000rpm).

Thanks John, will do. Just curious if removing the old thermal patches, cleaning the processor and GPU and using some Artic SIlver 5 will void my warranty?

Not if you don't break anything in the process. Follow the procedure in the service manual. However, first be sure that your cooling isn't working as designed.

It is probably something looking for an update. Event Viewer's system log should give a clue but also (i) under the power profiles make sure that wake timers are disabled (in the Sleep section - separate entries for mains and battery) and (ii) in Device Manager make sure that hardware such as the network devices are not allowed to wake the computer.

    Hi,

I recently bought E6410 Laptop with normal hard drive and 120 GB SSD Gskill one.

    1. I got drive caddy and installed ssd in DVD drive slot. I am planning to make this SSD as primary one for my OS.
Will there be any difference in ssd performance if I had installed ssd in acutal Harddrive slot?

    2. second question, can I reinsall my os (dell oem windows 7) on SSD with out any problem? do i need format os copy in acutal harddive before installing it on SSD?

    3. And for my Dvd optical drive, which i took out, what cable do i need for connecting it through external usb interface?
    please help me out?

Normally you won't have any problems. But I suggest to do the reverse, as the BIOS might be picky. In other words, it might get confused between CD/DVD and main OS boot. Take no chance, do things clean, and swap them. So put your SSD in your HDD, and your HDD in your optical drive slot.

Of course! No problem at all!
As long as only 1 OS with the same product is used at a time, your fine, and follow Microsoft Windows 7 End User License Agreement. To be specific, OEM license (what you have) state that the product key is tied to your system.

I would, however, highly suggest to backup all your data (if any), and format both HDD, to avoid any ""conflicts"" (the Win7 setup will may detect your other HDD Win7 and make a boot menu with options: "Windows 7" and "Windows 7", where one of them will be to your SSD... in other words, a headache for nothing.
