E6410 Owner's Thread

    need help guys!
    i have a serious problem!
    i downloaded the secure manager/embassy from dell and enabled finger print, i thought it would be the windows finger print access. but when i rebooted my laptop it shows me a preboot finger print, when i swipe my finger nothing happens. i did this at least 20 times. after an half minute or so, it go for the password option, the password doesn't work neither.
    it even won't enter BIOS.

    please help me guys!!

    We have so many users that would be impracticable to do that, and we do have our users that love the bugger. Only 1% of the mass amounts of laptops deployed have the eraser point ripped off, if we disabled it we may well have 10% complain.

    I've owned an E6410 since August 2010

    Two words - unacceptable reliability!

    The motherboard failed within the first month of ownership.

    The hard drive failed 4 months later.

    I've used Dell laptops for a good 10 years and this one has exhibitied the worst quality of all. In discussion with others just in my local organization alone, I've found 2 others that have had the same 2 failures occur within a few months of ownership.

    When I complained to Dell technician about the poor quality, he had 2 replies:

    1. We apologize that you feel that way
    2. Dont worry, we can quickly provide you replacement parts.

    Duh!

    Anyone else out there experience these quality issues?

    My E6410 has clocked up a lot of hours since August without such problems. However,the Dell HDD was replaced by my own SSD. Do you have Intel or Nvidia graphics?

    No such quality issues with my E6400 and E6410. And I have had good service from Dell support over the years.

    We get hundreds of E6400/E6410 a year, and the failure prone ones come in batches. I can run tickets against service tags in our database and you will see certain groups of service tags have high failure rates on certain parts. Most of the time the bad parts were the drives, but the most fustrating ones were the batch with bad NIC port boards.

    95% of the laptops are rock solid, it's the 5% that is the trouble.

    It's the same way with the Optiplex desktops.

    My E6400 is over 2 years old, and I have not faced with any problems.
    You have to consider that it's not Dell that makes your wireless card or optical drive or HDD and so on. Dell uses a multitudes of manufactures to provide you parts for your system. It is normal to get manufacture errors, that is why you have a warranty. Dell provides you with a 3 YEAR warranty (for this laptop, on most regions) to cover against failures. If you suggest in your head "Then Dell should pick better manufactures for these parts", then this is where you are wrong. They are FAR FAR worse manufacture to choose from, which Dell doesn't even pick for their low end models. Hence why Dell systems are more expensive (not to mention better service) than other manufactures. Granted they hire Foxcoon to produce the motherboards, BUT Dell uses decent quality components on their laptop. While most manufactures uses normal capacitors. Dell, like Lenovo, only uses solid capacitors for the laptop motherboard. Solid capacitors:
    - don't vibrate to produce a high pitch sound (if you hear one, it's not Dell fault, it's the CPU power circuit.. complain to Intel. It effects all Core 2 Duo's Mobile chips and up INCLUDING Intel Core i series for desktop's and intel new Sandy Bridge on desktop.. lucky on desktops you can (and is by default) disabled)

    - don't leak. Last MUCH longer, able to support higher currents, support better over charged.

    - Solid capacitors cost A LOT more than a normal one (for a capacitor price).

    Either it's just plain bad luck with a manufacture error (when you produce millions, you are bound to have an failure somewhere), or a simply bad batch.

    It's not "Duh". Most manufactures requires YOU to send them your laptop (you pay shipping for many of them), and they fix it within 1 or 2 weeks, and in some cases even 1 month. Dell and Lenovo (Lenovo's is only for select countries) offer next buisness day service like that, and even if you don't have the service, Dell is quick in repairing your laptop and THEY pat shipping. You should be very pleased.

    The capacitor issue is debateable, the GX270/GX280 problems are still fresh in the mind of many. Even as recent as the 745s, we have had cap issues.

    You are right though, dell can only do so much. If Foxcon isn't watching bad parts can and do slip onto motherboards.

    Dell can only trust that the Drive manufactuers are doing thier job, thier not going to sit there and test every drive. Nor should they, they can and do make sure the replacement is there quickly.

    I have NOTHING but rave reviews for our support from Dell, Parts always available next day. Return to depot and system replacement are options Dell can and will use.

    I was talking about current laptops. Not 5-6 year old Dell systems, which are also (the one mentioned) using normal capacitors, and in the case of the GX270/280, low end capacitor. But that was back in the days where every OEM used propitiatory parts, and Dell was #1 for way too long, which made them not care anymore. Today Dell is no longer #1, so Dell does it's best to sustain itself and slowly go up.
