Hi, I have a problem with my new Dell 6410 that I would like to discuss in this thread. I'm sorry if this question has been answered already, but I searched this thread as well as the net without finding any info.

The problem is related to the nVidia 3100M chip that seems to be overheated/overloaded when I connect an external screen to the docking station. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit and installed the drivers provided by Dell.

When running only one screen (either the built in screen or the external screen), the GPU temp is on average 75C (measured with HWiNFO32). When using two screens (extend desktop), the GPU temp never drops below 95C.

This is without any applications running in Windows (Aero is active). nVidia driver is 8.17.12.5922 (from Dell drivers).

I feel this may be a GFX driver problem, but I haven't found any newer driver for the 3100M. When the GPU temp is >90C, the CPU fan spins up and is really annoying (i.e. the CPU fan is constantly running when I have two monitors active).

Help on this problem would be very much appreciated. What is a "normal" temp for the GPU when running one/two monitors? 75C/95C seems way to high...

That is seriously hot. The GPU should only get hot when under a big 3D graphics load. I suspect that the heatsink is not properly mounted on the GPU. is the fan blowing out very hot air? How hot is the CPU temperature?

    Hi,
    Dear E6410 owners.
    (I have i5-520M, graphic: intel HD, Windows 7 Prof x64, disk 500GB hitachi 7200rpm)

    a) how often in your E6410 fan is running (in idle) (in my notebook it starts blowing about 2800-3300 rpm every few minutes)
    b) what is the temperature in idle in yours machines (i have 52C-54C idle, 88-90 in stress)
    c) do you hear in yours E6410 "high-pitched", "elektric", "quiet" noise?

    Thanks for response

a)When I had my E6410 the fan was basically silent all the time except when it was running like Prime95.

    b) What is your ambient? Your idle temperature look okay, but load is a bit high. Have you tried blowing out dust in the heatsink/heatfins/fans

    c) I did not notice any unusual ambient noises coming from my E6410

    Odd question, perhaps.
Has anybody looked for/found a compatible (1440x900 or more) IPS panel to replace the OEM panel on the e6410?

Given that it is a new notebook, and such a low ambient, I would check if thermal paste was applied correctly on the processor. The GPU is also on the CPU die, so check on that too. Access is very easy, 1 screw for the whole bottom plate, and boom it's right there. Or you can get your Service Manual and look at how to remove it.

If repasting does not help, you might want to contact Dell or if you have on site get at technician over to your home/office.

    Can you try another cable?

    (a) In my E6410 (i5-540M + Intel graphics) the fan tends to run continuously once it has turned on. Check the BIOS for any fan rules.
    (b) When my E6410 is docked and with CPU usage 10-20% (according to Task manager) has CPU temperatures in the range 40 to 50C with the fan running at 3300rpm. At that fan speed the noise is noticeable in a quiet room but is not intrusive. The temperature reached 83C under stress testing.
    (c) No strange noises that I notice but a few people have had encountered unwanted whines.

    John
