I did, yes. Should I uninstall it? The machine isn't running slow or anything, in fact quite the opposite, but the light just blinks constantly and it's annoying. But only when the DVD drive is connected, mind you.

My E6410 makes no sound but then my ears are middle aged. I've been
wondering if this was just a problem for young ears ? What frequency are
    we talking about ?

I'm quite young and have pretty keen hearing and I don't hear a thing coming from the machine.

    - Go in a quiet room (No AC running)
    - Set your computer to Dell Extended Battery or Power Saver
    - Close all your programs (computer should be completely idle)
    - Turn off bluetooth and WWAN
    - Listen carefully.

It's very slight, can't really say it's an annoyance though. I've heard machines where you can hear the whine from 5 metres away. This is nothing and to be expected I guess.

I uninstalled that Intel stuff and it still does it (the service isn't running either) - if the drive is connected it blinks constantly, as soon as I eject the drive it stops. Only on Windows though, so I wonder whether it's their drivers or Dell's BIOS. That's bloody annoying either way.

EDIT - Apparently this is a fairly common issue with SATA optical drives (I've not seen it before, or at least not recognized it), but since I very rarely use a physical optical drive, I've just disabled it in Device Manager. Once I start running with the lid shut on top of a docking station (where I can't see the blinding blue LED, I'll re-enable it).

My E6410 didn't have a whine. Of course, it had other issues, but this wasn't one of them.

Now if your high pitched whine is obvious even on the built in speakers or through external speakers during a lecture, then it really is a problem.

Ive imaged many E6410, and we had one so far that had a high pitched whistle. Seemed to be when the screen was on. We gave it to an old executive and he was none the wiser.

I would next run msconfig and look through the list of what is loading at startup. There could be something installed by one of your programs which is checking for removable media being installed.

Can anyone compare the E6410 / E6400 keyboard to the current Thinkpad T series 400/410.

I'm deciding between an E6410 or a Thinkpad T410. I've read that Lenovo does not provide good support in some parts of Europe, but I am based in the U.S. and have been satisfied with Lenovo support in my dealings with workplace and client interactions.

What I care most about is THE KEYBOARD.

The Thinkpads are supposedly known for their legendary keyboards. I have used them in the past and was pretty impressed.

I hate soft laptop keyboards. I type a lot of long papers and emails. I have been using a MacBook (white) for the past 2 months and the keys are too darn soft. My fingers are in such pain.

How would you rate the E6410 keyboard vs. the Thinkpad T series?

I haven't get a hand on the E6410 that I ordered yet. It seem Dell have messed up my order(YES, AGAIN). But from many review site I read, ThinkPad keyboards are slightly better than E6410. So, I have high hope for it. But people are complaining about the touchpad rather, which I'll be using Legitech mouse most of the time and hopefully that is not an issue. The issue for me is the screen which I heard T410 is quite terrible and that's the reason I went with E6410.
