My E4300 has a little protrusion up at the top of the screen. I think it's function may be to allow you to open the notebook easily since it has no latch. It works very well for that. I do not have a webcam on mine.

Yes -- when closed, the protrusion sticks out by about 1/8 inch, but is useful to be able to easily open the notebook. It doesn't seem irritating at all.

On a side note, I played a bit with a Z today. It was the Z21MN/H with the P8600/200GB/2GB/WXGA running quite cool. What a beautiful machine! It made the SZ sitting next to it look antiquated by comparison. The darned thing looked so low profile and sleek, it resembled a Ferrari. Too bad it was a ripoff at approximately $2700.

The premium carbon version must be a killer.

    Guys,

I concur with kschac. My laptop also doesn't have a webcam but has the protrusion at the top. It is neither irritating nor a problem. It's how I open my screen as well.

    sm1810,

I believe that is the ambient light sensor. The older latitudes had this and surely had no web cam.
