Yeah, this seems normal if it is right out of the box....

Give it several hours, especially if you have a lot of programs and data in your user's folder.

it can also be high "utilisation" because the CPU is not running at the max frequency. what are you power saving options set as? the CPU usually dynamically adjusts its clock speed, for example doing something basic it will switch to a lower frequency, and when you suddenly open a new program, perform an intensive task, it shows 40% utilisation, but its 40% of the lower speed. in short, the CPU is trying to run at the lowest speed it can to save power , clocking up when needed.

Currently I have the system on balanced power. Perhaps I'll change it to performance power.

However, it's still running the indexer. I re-installed Windows last night and installed all the drivers/programs I will be using. It seems stuck on 396 files indexed. I ended the index process in Task Manager and it ended up coming back in a few minutes.

How long does it take to index? I'm starting to wonder if my indexer is looping for some reason...

Sometimes when I go to the Indexing Options screen in Control Panel I see that it says "Indexing complete" but then after a few minutes it will go back to Indexing speed is reduced due to the user activity. Then it goes back to the same "user activity" text. Very strange.

If it says the indexing is complete, it is complete. It periodically checks files that change, which is why it says Indexing speed is reduced due to the user activity.

    369 files??

Seems like a light machine. Almost 250,000 files in my index here.

I think something is wrong with Dell's software interfering with the Indexer because it continues to index and switch between "Indexing is complete" and then goes back to indexing. -- Something like a non-stop Loop. I would think I would have more files than 396.

Try it without the Dell software.

I highly doubt that is the cause though. Simply moving the mouse will cause the indexer to throttle.

    I've got 1,489 files indexed.

Though, I don't have any of my music, photos or videos currently stored here.

If you just installed Windows, and have not yet added any documents or media, then the index will be quite small.

Does your indexer run 16% of your CPU almost all the time? Only on my Latitude is it doing this. Everything else the indexer is always at or close to 0%.

Yeah, if you got Outlook, expect the number to approach a range similiar to mine.

    edit:

I'd give your indexer another day or so. As long as you are using your laptop, the indexer is going to be shy and stay throttled.

No, my processor usage is normal.

Has the indexer completed indexing? Or does it say, "Indexing Speed Reduced Due to User Activity" ?
