How many handles is your laptop using ? Processes really doesn't do it justice.

    18,700 handles.

It goes from Indexing completed to indexing again. For the first 3 minutes after loading Windows 7, the indexer.exe doesn't start and my CPU usage is at 1-3%. Then indexer comes on and CPU usage jumps from 10-20% and doesn't stop.

Which means it is still indexing.....

18,700 is pretty typical. # of processes don't mean jack IMO. I got my x200T with 80 processes, but 30,000 handles going.

I decided to reinstall Windows 7 and follow Dell's instructions on installing the drivers: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/driver_install_order

I let my computer go idle for almost a day and the indexer just kept working even though it said it was complete. There must have been a conflict. So what I am going to do is follow the sequence of drivers to install and see if one of them starts this erratic indexer again. I'm going to install the drivers after a day or so to let Windows finish indexing first.

    Hope this works *fingers crossed*.

Upon reinstalling, I was able to install all Dell drivers in the recommended order. No SearchIndexer.exe loop. I then went ahead and installed Office 2007 Ultimate. Again no SearchIndexer.exe loop. Everything seemed like it was going good and so I decided to install Visual Studio 2008. After installing Visual Studio, SearchIndexer.exe started doing the same thing. I wonder now if it's something to do with VS or a conflict between VS and Dell's software. I wonder if any programmers own an E6400 :(

I'd debug the process, probably, will do it tonight. Bummer.

I have Visual Studios on my Inspiron and haven't seen this problem.

I have VS 2008 on my system. I have DCP installed, and it's all running smoothly for me.

If you're on Vista, be sure to grab SP2. Also, be sure to get SP1 for VS 2008.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. I'll make sure that I have VS 2008 installed. I didn't see this issue when I had the non-Dell Intel 5300 drivers and application installed. That was when I had a ES Intel 5300 from eBay, but now I have card that I bought directly from Dell. Tomorrow I'll update and fool around with it. There's really no other thing that I can think of. All my other PC's have VS 2008 or 2005 and run fine with Indexer enabled but never always running CPU usage.

Do you have VS 2008 SP1? It doesn't come down through Windows Update, which is why I ask.

You have to go to Microsoft's download page and manually download and install it.

I downloaded it and installed. Didn't fix the problem. Indexer for some reason goes nuts on my machine when VS2008 is installed default settings. My other machines run it fine, but they're custom desktops without Dell software. I debugged it, but there were too many DLL's to bother trying to fix.

Currently I re-installed Windows 7 64 Pro again (thank god for Retail CD License) and have just Dell Drivers & Applications and Msoft Security Essentials installed and the Indexer is working properly. Next I will install Office Ultimate 2007 and see if it still stays at bay. I may just leave VS 08 off this machine if that's the case. I'd use indexer more than vs 08 on this laptop.
