How so? I saved him $600 by doing so and there's absolutely nothing wrong with a refurbished laptop from Dell. I have gotten one and another friend has gotten one. Both were indistinguishable from a new laptop and were significantly cheaper than if bought new. You also receive the laptop within 3-5 days instead of having to wait 2 weeks or more. It's really the only way to get a blue or red Latitude E without paying a huge price premium.

    Here's what I got him:

    Dell Latitude E6400
    Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53GHz, 6M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    4GB DDR2 800MHz (2 DIMMs)
250 GB Free Fall Sensor Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M With PC-Card
Genuine Windows XP Pro with Vista Business License
    Integrated Webcam with digital microphone
Dell 1397 802.11B/G Wireless Mini Card
    Fingerprint Reader Internal
    9 Cell Battery, Primary
    Back-lit Keyboard
14.1 inch WXGA+ LED Laptop Screen
8X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability
    Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module
    Regatta Blue

    $908 + tax

If bought new this is $1573 + tax

The only thing I would have liked is a P-series instead for the longer battery life and less heat.

    That's a good price.

Has anyone else had BSOD saga's with the notebook?

I had a lot of BSOD's on startup which were originally due to a bad RAM module and promptly resolved on replacing the module under warranty.

Unfortunately, I just got another Bad_Pool_Caller 00000000xc BSOD on startup but has since not recurred *fingers crossed*

    Any idea?

Try this stress testing program to see if the computer is stable.

Whoops, I thought that you meant that your friend sent one back to BE refurbished and that you bought the same one AFTER it was refurbished.

There is nothing at all wrong with refurbs. They are great deals. I was wondering how you knew that you were getting your friend's laptop back. Boy, was I off :)

Haha... that's actually a really good idea if you want a laptop with a 128GB solid state drive because those those get marked down a LOT. You can get a decent one for around $1,200 minus a 15% off coupon. They're usually bought within a few hours though.

yes - only switched to ATA for the update. Then you have to switch back because otherwise Windows loads the Intel driver but can`t find a drive - because it is ATA. Switch back right after the update! I also use IRRT.
And the first try (which didn't work - invalid data or something like that) also took 45min. After i switched to ATA it took about 20min. Dell says it'll take about 15min.

I have not had the BSOD saga so far with the E6400; but I did have a really nasty round of BSOD's with my previous computer (a T61) which eventually got completely solved by driver and firmware finally getting smoothed out.

Any time you have a new machine, some of the hardware configurations will be a little rough. Probably not all of them, since the manufacturer does some testing. But it's impossible for the manufacturers to extensively test every configuration that they have to support.

I do have an HDMI device listed in the sound applet in control panel. Mine doesn't show up unless I have my TV connected (or you can right click and choose "Show Disconnected Devices" - then mine always shows up). I don't get an extra icon in the systray though.

One thing to be aware of is that you will probably need to change your default audio device to HDMI every time you connect. Also, if you have a program open and then connect something through displayport, you'll have to restart that program in order to get audio to play through displayport (even if you've already set "HDMI Device" as the default audio device). It's not a huge deal, just something to keep in mind.

It varies, whether it varies on the country you buy it from, the model you order, or the deal you get, I don't know.

My E6500 came with Vista Business on CD, but XP Pro installed, which was what I was told to expect.
