nVidia has finally started to distribute drivers from its own site. There's a new driver for notebooks, version 179.23. It's compatible with the NVS 160M but specifically not the Latitude, which is a shame. Let's hope they get a good driver out soon for us lot.

    Yes.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL = hardware problem that mainly causes BSODS
INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE = Hardware related
STOP 0xxxxx error = Usually caused by a bad mobo or RAM
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED = Can mean a number of things, again mostly related to hardware issues.
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA = hardware problem

    For more read this:

Drivers are software which helps the OS communicate to the hardware. So that means if a driver bluescreens it either A) had a problem talking to the hardware or B) Is buggy.

Is that not what I said?

In regards to your DVD problem have you tried switching the DVD out (haven't read this thread)?

I've never heard of having a bluescreen when playing a DVD. Try also using a different DVD and different DVD software. Other than that it's probably a hardware/driver problem. But seriously, when was the last time you had to worry about a driver for an optical drive?

P.S. I HAVE seen software cause bluescreens but not nearly as not nearly as close as hardware related problems have. And I will lump drivers into that hardware RELATED category.

Yes, it's strange that starting to play a DVD causes a BSOD. There may not be a driver for the optical drive, but it's a SATA device that Intel's Matrix Storage software has to administer. It's a STOP 0x0 ---- 8E.

Anyway, I'm not losing sleep over this one.

Different subject: I have discovered one cause of why the BIOS does the interminable self-test on boot-up: Have a BIOS level password, start the computer and then get distracted before you enter the password. Eventually the computer times out and switches off. When you restart it, the BIOS assumes there was a problem the previous time and does a full self-test.

I think I will try the converter at very last cause my friend bought one for his xbox360 and it gives really awful image, especially when it's so cheap... I know the issue is not to getting the wiring to match up but I was talking about vga(analog) to s-video(analog) so it should have worked if the e6400 has tv-out through vga port, right? And so it should work if I can find DisplayPort (digital) to YCbCr(digital too according to wikipedia)?
PS: Pardon me for my broken english, I'm french and still learning

I put a DVD in my E6400 for the first time and I get a region error. Is this just because it's the first time I've tried to play a DVD in the E6400?

Or did Dell assign a strange region to my player?

My E6400 arrived with no region selected, 5 changes remaining. I stumbled upon the setting and selected Region 1 but never played a DVD... more pressing issues. Then I re-installed Vista from scratch including Cyberlink Power DVD and played a DVD, no problem. Checking now, I see that my DVD region is set to 1, 4 changes remaining. So, Dell shipped no region and my clean install defaulted to the correct region... go figure. To set your region, drill into the properties/settings for your DVD drive listed in Explorer.

Regarding the DVD BSOD, I notice that Dell lists new firmware for the Panasonic DVDRW drive. I have the Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology drive.

I checked my region and it's set to 1. Must be the DVD is the wrong region (!?).

Yup. I just checked with another DVD. I wonder why the store sold me a non-US region DVD in the US (!?).

Sometimes another region can be cheaper. But watch out, since once you have used up the very limited number of region changes then it will be locked to the last region you used. There are workarounds, depending on which model burner you have. See www.rpc1.org.

Well perhaps, but I tend to stick with only one region. The place that sold this DVD was a gift shop at a museum, so it makes me wonder if maybe they got the wrong region (possibly for cost) and didn't realize that US players would not play it?

I have to say all things considered, I like the E6400 a lot so far now that I've had it a couple weeks. I'm just putting this sort of comment in because otherwise new owners tend to only put comments in threads like this when they have a problem.
