I agree with John Ratsey. For me, quality of the laptop speakers is non-important, and if my Latitude is as you say:

Then very soon I will be a happy man.

Still, I sympathize with you. Just like most users here, for me my laptop has to be perfect in everything I want to do with it. It just so happens that I use the included speakers very little. I would say that the option not to include decent speakers (Harman/Kardon or others of that kind) is adequate, as it would make the laptop bulkier and probably heavier.

Maybe you should look at a lightweight 15.4 inch laptop instead?

I'd like to ask two questions to E6400 users:

    1) The dedicated graphics card in this notebook, Nvidia Quadro 160, has DDR2 or DDR3 memory?

    2) Has any of you ordered a model with "Cool Slice"? Supposedly it will help your laptop run cooler. Those of you who have this, is it worth it?

    Thanks in advance.

the dedicated gpu (nvs 160M) in the e6400 has DDR2 ram, the e6500 has DDR3.

Is this a "cheap" solution, or would using DDR3 have disadvantages?

I was in a chat session earlier today with a rep on Dell's Small Business Divisions website concerning an order for a new Vostro 1510 laptop that my brother was sending to me for Christmas. Well I found out today in the chat session the reason it didn't come for Christmas was because it hasn't been built yet. The rep told me that a Latitude E6400 was a much better laptop than a Vostro 1510. Is a Latitude E6400 a better machine? I haven't even priced one yet on Dell.com but decided to ask my question here first.

The E6400 is over a pound lighter, comes standard with a 3 year warranty, has the new Montevina platform (1066mhz FSB), and is more aesthetically pleasing. It's better all around.

Yes, the E6400 is lighter (but the E6400 is 14.1" and the Vostro 1510 is 15.4"), thinner, stronger, newer hardware, etc., but also more expensive. The Vostro series was created for businesses who wanted notebooks without the Latitude cost. Have a look for the E6400 in Dell Outlet since some good deals are appearing there. Also look at the E5400 and E5500 which, I assume, are the E series equivalents of the Vostros.

I just priced an E6400 and it's more expensive than a Vostro 1510. I mailed my brother 2 Dell laptop configurations in early December, he offered to buy me one for Christmas. One configuration I sent him was a Inspiron 1525, the other was a Studio 15. All I would do on the laptop is surf the web and email.

I talked to the guy who ordered the computer for me on Christmas eve, I asked him which configuration did he order, he said neither. He ordered me a Vostro 1510, said I'd like it better than the other two because it's built better, has a better case, etc. He went on to say he likes it better because he has one. That's like saying I like Hellmann's, you'll like Hellmann's.

My brother spoke to me about this back in November 2008, told me to mail him details on at least two Dell systems, systems I would like, I did but I didn't include any specs on any Vostro, personally I don't like the looks of the Vostro. The guy didn't even configure the Vostro with a 56k modem which I found out later from Dell that you couldn't configure a Vostro with a 56k modem. I need a 56k modem. That's when the Dell rep in chat said to take a look at the Latitude E6400 which could be configured to include a built in 56k modem. Thanks for your comments.
