I don't know the difference between the cards you are considering but in my case, I got the Intel 5300 AGN (which has lots of antennas), and the Wifi on this E6400 is the best I've ever had, which means a lot better than the high end Intel cards I had in the T61s, Z61, and some Toshiba and Compaq laptops.

I give a big positive recommendation to the Intel 5300 in the E6400.

    1. I use F-Prot Antivirus x64 on Vista... 5-user license for about $29 a year. You can mix and match 32-bit and 64-bit license usage. MS Defender comes with Vista. And I have yet to work on using Vista's outbound firewall.

Vista is more secure, and Vista x64 is even more secure by design, "The 64-bit Windows kernels actively police themselves to guard against many rootkit-style and other kernel attacks that have caused so many problems for users of the 32-bit Windows operating systems." grc.com

    2. Yes. If you remove the bottom plate, you can see that various mini-cards are installed. (The WWAN mini-card slot can be used for the Intel Flash module... not offered by Dell, yet, and my not be supported by their BIOS, yet, but it's in their E6400 guide.)

    3. I have the Intel 5300 WiFi so my next router could be the Linksys 610N... dual band and Gigabit Ethernet.

    Thanks... :)

I saw that there's this Dell Mobility 64GB SSD option, would that probably be the new Samsung MLC drive?

I have just received my replacement E6400, following my issues with the bent chassis and a vibrating hard drive.

The chassis seems to be straight this time and the hard drive is a lot quieter, although it seems to click a lot. The new one is a 7200 rpm Fujitsu 250 Gb, the old one was a WD 7200 250 Gb. HD Tune reports very similar performance, with the Fujitsu access time being 20 ms, as opposed to WD's 15 ms.

The new laptop has the LG WXGA+ screen, as opposed to the old one's Samsung. It is a lot bluer, but it actually seems to have whites that are much closer to the real thing. It does seem like the LG bleeds somewhat more.

Is it possible to get the two displays swapped?

How are some of you determining the make of the E6400's installed LCD?

If you go to Device Manager, Monitor and go to the Details tab of the device Generic PnP Monitor, you can select Hardware IDs from the menu. Samsung displays have SEC5442, LG's have I think LPL, but I don't have it in front of me to verify.

I have LPL, which I suppose indicated LG. I have the LED WXGA+. Despite having too much resolution for my taste, that has not been a problem, and in every other respect, the display is excellent.

Due to the lack of foresight, I purchased my E6400 with a b/g mini card and without the n.

Should I just buy an express card? Or get a USB adapter? Or can I replace the entire mini card (is this easy)?
