I just received a refurbished E6400 yesterday. It is WXGA+ and the hardware id is AUO4047. I spent several hours to look for a spec of that panel. I ran into either 14.1" AUO WXGA w/ LED or 14.1" AUO WXGA+ w/ CCFL. Is there anyway to find out the panel is LED w/o taking of the bezel?
Anyone experience or comment on AUO WXGA+?

For all the owners of LED panel, could you please check on the bottom of our laptop, is there a HG sign? I heard that if it have LED it shouldn't have that sign. Mine has that.

Do you have both CD/DVD for Vista Business and XP? Cause I only had the XP along with application cd and roxio (total 3 discs)

Mine is super bright on max setting, I use it w/ only level 4. Yea, a view angle is a little suck. The point stick is hard to use at first, but at least I get used to it after several hours, but T60 is better.

ST980411ASG is quiet. Integrated graphic runs cool w/ just web browser (the fan did not come on at all w/ 3 hrs used (bios A12) )

The refurbished I got look like brand new. Just a little sticky stuff on the battery (you can't even see it if don't look carefully). Even the first turn on runs about 30sec checking BIOS, and of course Window first boot too.

Sticky stuff?! You mean there used to be a sticker but now you have the glue that is left on it? I have an amazing solution to remove it without damaging the plastic.
Apply on the sticky area (or on the label you want to remove) vegetable (cooking) oil (YES!). Put some on that area and wait several minute and gently, with no pressire rub several times during the wait. then use a sponge with soap (CAREFUL, you don't want to have the sponge too wet as it drip and go inside the casing very easily) and dry immediately with a cloath. Repeat until completly removed.

It's time consuming solution put it wont' damage the plastic. The oil will prevent the glue from entering the texture of the plastic and be stuck there for ever, also prevent a chemical reaction of deforming the plastic texture (depends on the glue and plastic). And this is why you should gently rub... if you apply pressures then you squish the glue into the plastic texture and well... your kinda screwed as you'll be lucky if you are able to remove it (well you might.. again it depends on the plastic). If you don't use vegetable oil.. well you won't be able to remove it without damaging the plastic or penetrate the glue inside the plastic texture.

If you think to remove the palm rest label this way.. don't bet on it. The day I replaced my palm rest I tried that and it did work, but the glue is very acid and it will leave permanent and ugly, reflective shape on the plastic of the shape of the label. And you won't be able to put the label back... yea.. it's THAT kind of glue (the assy one).

GoodBytes - thanks for the tip, I'll try it later. Is there anyway to find out the panel is LED w/o taking of the bezel? In addition, can I just take the bezel out w/o took of the whole display assembly per manual instruction. (Sorry I hate to crack the bezel on a "almost" brand new laptop). Like I already mentioned, I ran into either 14.1" AUO WXGA w/ LED or 14.1" AUO WXGA+ w/ CCFL.

Veritas72 - is it the only part has Hg in the laptop is CCFL?? (I might be wrong).

Anyone experience or comment on AUO WXGA+?

Hg means that the laptop contains mercury, and should me recycled at special facilities. Call your city to know where you can access one of these center (usually outside of the city).

I also have the Hg icon. Probably the soldering of the laptop motherboard or a component contains a small amount of mercury. Or probably the CCFL light has mercury but they use the same labels for all teh laptop that you have it or not.

One other thing I'd like to know is did the HDD ship in a refurbished outlet unit. I can imagine customers sending back E6400s that have issues and sound noisey. Or Dell dumping noisey drives on outlet customers who are getting a good deal otherwise.

Mine is a refurbished unit, and ST980411ASG is silent. I only hear it if I put my ear within 2" of the drive. (And I'm 25 if that's matter)

Look up the display Hardware ID details in Device Manager and then you can match with a known unit. Mine is SEC5442, Samsung WXGA+ LED.

I think I'll rest my case... some drives are noisey and/or consume more power than others, but not because they run at 7200RPM. If my E6400 drive sounded like an always on fan, I'd call Dell to replace it.

The drives in the refurbished units are the same one shipped in the original unit. Of course, they could have been noisy and therefore the unit was returned. But I don't think Dell dumped noisy or otherwise inferior drives in the outlet units.

I got two (actually three) E6400's from the outlet, and the 7200 rpm drives are noisier. If you look at newegg's reviews of those drives (like the Seagate 7200.3), you see the same feedback: some people say they are quiet, and some say they are noisy. I don't think the incidence of noisy drives is any higher among refurbished units than brand new ones. Quiet is in the eye of the beholder.
