I'm running Vista Ultimate and IE7 on my E6400. I loaded it from scratch and have none of the DCM crap. IE7 will freeze and have to be restarted every day or two or sometimes a couple of times a day. I also get Wordpad freezing up when viewing large txt files. Anyone else exhibiting similar tendencies? I'm trying to figure out what's killing me.

Oh, and for the IE problem, event viewer shows "The program iexplore.exe version 7.0.6001.18000 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Problem Reports and Solutions control panel. Process ID: 6f8 Start Time: 01c9a4f204059f9f Termination Time: 0". Searching 'Problems and solutions' turns up nothing.

occasionally hangs under win7, the inability to safely remove external drives (especially esata), the complete system hang when connecting an esata drive. maybe others, can't remember off the top of my head. anyway, it solves all of them.

You really have a strange problem.
Download and run MemTest86. It's a 100% free diagnostic tool for your RAM:
    http://www.memtest.org/
See if any errors comes up.

If you have free time, run the one from Windows Vista. To do this, insert Vista disk, and boot from it. Then click on "Repair Windows" and select the option to diagnose your RAM. But, do MemTest first!

Then run Dell laptop diagnostic tool, this will test your RAM, CPU cache and check if every device is working.
To to do this, restart your laptop, and press F12 key during the Dell Logo startup. If I am not mistaken with the F# key that you need to press. A menu should appear.. select the diagnostic tool.

This test will confirm that your system is at 100%. If not, contact Dell Tech Support, and explain the situation and your findings.

    Once done, in Windows,
    - Right click on the partition of where windows is located, and select "properties".
    - Go under the "Tool" tab, and click on "Check now". This will check for any HDD errors and try to repair the problem.
    - A panel will open, make SURE that both check boxes are CHECKED.
    - A restart will be needed to continue, let it go and scan your harddrive.

All of these steps will take a long time (several hours all together). If you need a system, I suggest to use another one during this time.

Now see if your problem comes back....
If so.. we know it's a driver issue (or the chip), from the motherboard chipset or the SATA controller.

I have tried the version before (1008) in vista 32 and was not pleased at all, i had hangups and lost the dvd drive from time to time so I had to go back to Dells driver. Perhaps is the new one so much better, i will give it try.

Did you contact Dell? If they don't know and the problem sounds annoying, and a system re-install did not help... they'll probably ship you a new system (or a new motherboard...). Because, like... no one else has this problem.
