it is a Liion battery, it doesnt matter much if you misuse it. 19% is not the right wear after 2 years, it should be almost unusable after two years, period. so either it is registering incorrectly and you never notice because you are always on AC, or you don't know what you are talking about. Lithium batteries wear no matter way, it is a function of the chemistry.

I have my laptop since November. I was told that if you use the battery about everyday pretty much fully, it should last a year to a year and half. After that, the battery is finished, and only get few hours (1-3) on my 9-cell battery.

So far, it looks like that is the scenario. The down side is unlike the U.K or U.S where you can find online battery for cheaper. I am preatty much stuck with Dell Canada prices :(.

YAY! My laptop from the outlet finally got delivered today! It has XP on it for now until I can get Win 7/XP dual boot on the new hard drive I just ordered.

The laptop looks and feels rock solid. I'll work on tweaking it this weekend but I'm very impressed so far. Specs are:

    Intel C2D P8600
2G DDR2 RAM (have 4G's coming in from new egg)
160G 5400 RPM HD (got a 250G coming with the RAM)
    DVD/CDRW
    Intel 5300 card
    Nvidia Qudro NVS 160M
    1280x800 LED LCD
    Back-lit keyboard
    6-cell Battery

BatteryBar shows 6.1% wear on mine (81,308 mWh/86,580 mWh). I can't get RMClock to install.

I bought refurbished and have been using mine for about 1 month. My usage is usually the following:
    Dead in the morning.
Charge, with or without use while charging, to full in the morning.
Drain to dead (<5%) throughout classes
High-end usage while charging (in the lab).
    Discharge again at home.
    Repeat

for a lithium battery, that is PRECISELY the WRONG way to treat it. that is the proper cycling for a NiMH battery. you should try when possible not to let your liion battery below ~80%

I won't complain when the battery craps out but I gotta use my notebook like a notebook. I guess I should have paid for the battery insurance/replacement thing afterall.

This is how I use my laptop.
    Morning: System fully recharged
Day: Use it all day, get down to about 10% when I am done.
Night: Go home plug-it in and use my desktop (or laptop)

Although I agree that you should take good care of your battery when you don't need it, I'm also in favor of using it when you do need it. You paid for it, so use it. If it gets busted after a year or so, you can always buy a new one.

don't get me wrong. I do the same thing, I just wanted to be clear that it constituted serious misuse of a lithium ion battery. :) burn away.

Discharging the battery over night, I think is just plain stupid. You are home, use the PSU. However, I think always keeping the battery at above 80% is stupid. Because you have like ~1 hour of battery life on a 9-cell battery, just to extend it's life for 6 more month or so is ust not worth it.. I better have no battery at all than this, or actually use my battery.
