Did you try the SRS Application on the E6400 downloads. It contains various options. However, you will never get good audio out of the E6400's little tweeters.

:sigh: Yes John, I am the one that told so many people on this post about it.
It is just that with different sound IDT chip people where to enable even further options like Doubly system beside SRS, and other features. I don't mind the sound quality on my laptop, but it's always fun to have more.

Both the left & right speaker grilles across the E-Series are removable & replaceable, independant of the palmrest.

have you used the IDT audio control panel? it has a lot of options beyond just the straight windows ones. apologies if you have, it isn't clear from the conversation.

I've removed both. With undoing 2 screws each.

Well you have a different laptop. What can I say?
The one on the left is completely attached to the palm rest. You need remove the palm rest entirely and bend the several metal things attached to the grid 90 degrees to pull it off. You can't just pull it.. if you did somehow, then you have metal parts in your laptop, and I would be seriously worried.

    Er...he has a m4400 and a e6400...?

But, the official documentation only references removing a right speaker grill: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6400/en/sm/html/palmrest.htm#wp1181046

    Ok now I am lost.
If he has a m4400, I don't want to kick him but then wrong forum section or at least mention it and keep doing so when it gets split apart by other posts.

If he has e6400.. here is a picture to prove that the left grid is attached and can't be removed, and finish with this silly battle.

Back (blue circle shows where it's attached to the palm rest. They are no screws):
