I'd like to post an update regarding my overheating E6400:

Dell has sent me a replacement laptop which I have been testing. It behaves much better, the GPU temperature never goes above 80ºC whatever I throw at it. The original deal was that I would keep this laptop while Dell would fix my old laptop at their depot. However, I asked to keep this new laptop permanently and they accepted! :)

It seems that it was a wise choice to let Dell replace the motherboard and heatsink once before asking for this. I'd advise anyone with the same problem to do the same. PM me if you need more information.

I'm off to enjoy my new lappy now :) :)

New Control Point drivers/apps out the past days, testing to see if fingerprint reliability is better in Windows 7, can't get any worse ;)

Wow, I spoke with my IT Support yesterday afternoon, and this afternoon, hey presto, replacement battery. That is pretty darn good for living in rural Australia, I mean getting anyhting from our capital city normally takes 2-3 working days, so again Dell Support shines through! I did run RMClock and tried a couple of the other batteries from the other 10 we bought and they all were around 52000mWh capacity, mine was the only dud of the lot :( Anyway all's well now:

So my E6400's keyboard decided to die on me this morning. I'm moving into college in TWO days...and apparently Dell tech's replacing the keyboard isn't covered under the Next Day Business warranty. So I had to deal with this tech over the phone from El Salvador with a terrible accent. Not a good experience there, so I started a chat session at the sametime. The tech there did managed to get an approval for a tech to come to my dorm! Dell doesn't send parts/techs to hotels apparently.

The only issue is, I won't actually be moved in till thursday. So I've still got to figure out exact timing and all...but at least I didn't just waste two complete hours on the phone.

You can't remove 2 screws? Is the diagrams presented here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6400/en/sm/html/keyboard.htm#wp1179980 are so complicated to understand that you need assistance? It takes like 30sec to do. This is probably the easiest laptop to work with internally you will ever have.
That is the main reason they don't want to send a tech. It's just not worth anyone the trouble, including yourself.

Yes, the E6400 might be the most serviceable notebook out there...but keep in mind that not everyone is willing to crack open computer technology.

The guy paid for warranty service, and Dell has a history of trying to get people to service their own machines (was there not a big lawsuit in NY about this?). Anyway, if the guy wants someone to replace the keyboard than that is his choice.

I personally like to do the work myself on any of my computers (that way I know it is quality enough work), but if I have to have a tech do it I'm there right with them looking at the procedure the whole time. Usually if it is something like a complete board replacement I'll ask them to do it, mostly because I don't want to have to mess with the thermal pads.

Hmmm, that is true. I did not think of that.

Thanks, and I take what I said back.

You both bring up good points. I don't want to do it myself mainly because I thought I HAD bought the warranty that should come with this service. Plus the fact, I do not like opening a notebook. A desktop is fine, but I'd prefer not opening up my notebook. It's just weird that they would replace the Bezel, but somehow the keyboard isn't included in that warranty. I mean, the bezel you just snap on.

Either way, I'm glad I could get Dell to compromise to send me a tech anyway. I just got to figure out what time and where to meet them now.

I'm the new owner of a refurbished Latitude E6400. I've been getting shocked by the frame of the laptop when I have it plugged into the AC adapter.

I've already contacted Dell and they are sending me a replacement laptop. I just wanted to post here to see if anyone else has had this issue.

Other than that issue, everything else is great.
