Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying the E6400 with the P8700, 128GB SSD, 4GB RAM and 6 - Cell battery, rest standard.

    I got 2 questions regarding this config (and in general);
(1). How heavy is this thing? I've watched some reviews on youtube and it looks rather bulky tbh so I'm abit concerned about the weight as I will take this machine with me quite alot.

(2). How much battery time does the 6-cell battery give? Ive read on forums that it goes up to 5 hours, but just thought I'd ask the ppl who uses this machine on a daily basis. Also does it stick out in the back? If Yes, by how much?

    Appriciate your help guys!

    Nick

    1) Weight- configured with Intel integrated graphics, SSD, and 6-cell battery- it will weigh very close to 5lbs.

    2) Battery life- I can't comment specifically on the 6-cell. My E6400 has the P8600 processor, Intel graphics, 320GB 7200rpm hard drive, DVD-RW, backlit keyboard, WXGA+ LED-backlit display and 9-cell- I can easily get 6-7hrs with power settings optimized for longer battery life!

Yes, the weight will be about 5lbs. It's not the lightest 14" machine but it is very solid.

My experience is 5 to 6 hours from the 6 cell battery if you have Intel graphics. The nVidia GPU reduces this by about an hour while the SSD should add half an hour. This assumes a dim backlight, no wireless and no applications running which create significant CPU usuge.

Aren't you supposed to have more battery life because you have the Nvidia solution? That is my battery life (7hours and half, min brighntess + wireless ON)

    p8600 + intel graphics + 6cell batt + WD 5400rpm + win764bit = 3.5hrs (high performance) ; 4.5hrs (balance performance) ; 6hrs (dell recommended power maximizer) with multiple surfing using bluetooth mouse and wifi

Just got my E6400 today, wanting to re-install vista business that it came with

Laptop came with no Vista Discs
Partition on the hard drive does not contain a restore

    Is that normal?

How do I re-install vista on this rig?

    Absolutely not.
You are suppose to have a Dell disk that Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit. If you do not have this disk, contact Dell as soon as possible and explain that you noticed that you are missing your Vista disk.

No a dedicated GPU (nVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M) reduces overall battery life by 20-30 minutes on average. It's more powerful, but it uses more power and generates more heat as a tradeoff.

Crap, replace "Nvidia" on my quote to "Intel", because I read on your original post that you have my battery life but have Intel GPU.
    Wow big mix up. :)
