Thanks allfiredup and John Ratsey for your informative replies!

Is it a hassel to drag along the E6400 on a daily basis because of the 5lbs weight tag? I will be using this computer for my last 2 years in UNI so I will be carrying it around in my backpack along with books etc so I really dont want it to be too heavy, but still very solid due to books etc being in the backpack as well.

My girlfriend who's in the HR business has a HP nc6400 and that one comes in at 4,6ish lbs but other than that it's fine in terms of bulkyness. Has anyone here used both the HP nc6400 and the Dell E6400 so I could get some comparison between the two? The weight and bulkyness of the nc6400 is probably the maxium I would like to go.

5lb is a lot, but it depends on YOUR BAG. The closets the laptop is to back the lighter it will feel. With comfortable shoulder straps, and you can run with it without notice. But if you don't have backpack for laptop and use these side, on one shoulder type of bag, then I think it will be an issue.

In nice warm days, I like to walk to university, that is a 45min journey. I carry my Latitude E6400 with it's 9-cell battery + mouse + 1 or 2 university books + laptop 90W PSU and I have no problem. And believe me, I am not some kind of ultra muscular guy or anything like that. I don't normally take the PSU, but I took it several time for weight test.

It all comes down to the bag you use to carry your stuff. If you put it away from back in the bag, or on your shoulder, it feels like carrying water bottles... not fun. But closets form you back (these back usually have a laptop compartment), and I can run easily.

    Thanks for the reply mate.

I do have a pretty decent laptop backpack with a notebook compartment at the back of the bag. It's just that my current laptop is rhougly 6,4lbs and I'm dreading, should I buy the E6400, that the weight will be an issue as this is my main issue today, and the reason I'm buying a new laptop.

    Hmm what to do!

Oh I got a better idea. How about contacting Dell to replace your faulty memory :D

Why? it's faulty, change the memory.

The laptop only has 2 memory slots. If the 2 memory slots are empty, than your system can't even boot as you are missing the RAM, which might explained your problem.

Here is what you can do. I think this is the best thing to try. Try to find a series of books that sum up close to the weight, and put that in your bag the closest to your back (pile one on top of the other, and NOT next to each other as you would normally do, as this will be heavier than what it would really be), and see how it feels. Now in reality it should be a bit lighter, as the laptop will be thinner and possibly smaller than your books. If you can carry that fine, then you should be comfortable with this laptop. I tried this with bottle of water with the equation of as 1L = 1Kg, and the plastic of the bottle is negligible, but I ended up with a much heavier bag, as the bottles are way more thick than the laptop, not to mention further away from my back.

I have my e6400 for a week now. Its a very nice machine, however, the fan is running constantly, making the whole machine noisy. This happens both in Vista and Win7 (both 64-bit).

I got the P9600 with the intel graphics and hdd (bios A15).

The temperaturs are well below ~33 degrees (idle or web browsing). When running orthos on both cores the temperature raises to 65-70 degrees. The fan speed stays the same. So, to me it seems that the fans are just running on a constant speed. Only when i flashed the bios, the fan speed increased for a couple of seconds.

The dimensions of the HP Compaq nc6400 and Dell Latitude E6400 appear to be very similar (width, depth and starting weight are almost identical). HP only shows the thickness at the front edge (thinnest point- 29.2mm) and the E6400 is 27mm at the thinnest point and 31mm at the thickest....so it's likely a bit thinner overall than the HP.

If the nc6400's size/weight are acceptable to you, the E6400 shouldn't be an issue. The only option/upgrade that will add substantial weight is the 9-cell battery...go with the standard 6-cell if you're trying to keep weight under 5lbs!

Another possible option might be the Latitude E4300! It's the 13.3" model very similar to the E6400. It has a standard 13.3" WXGA (1280x800) LED, Intel medium-voltage CPUs (SP9300/SP9400), uses DDR3 memory, and is only available with Intel integrated graphics. It also has better battery life than the E6400. It's also a bit more expensive than the E6400 on the regular Dell site, but the Dell Outlet has them available starting under $800!

FYI- any Latitude E4x00 or E6x00 laptops from the Dell Outlet have the same full 3-year warranty standard as their 'new' counterparts! :D
