All those BIOS options for the CPU should work. If disabling them stops your lockups then it's the CPU itself which isn't on top form.

However, you will need to re-enable the CPU options once you have everything running smoothly and get the lockups to start happening again in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Reverted all but SpeedStep back to defaults and it's still working OK. Will try re-enabling that again and see if the problems come back.

To add an update to the situation, after trying numerous things and thinking I'd had it licked yesterday, had two more freeze-up instances today (bleh). Just got off the phone with them and they're sending a replacement.

50c or less is typical while running 2D apps and if the CPU isn't doing much.

3D and compute intensive apps cause the temperature to rise quickly. I've seen my E6510 get to above 70c when running multiple copies of Celestia.

I am here to report that INDEED the back lit keyboard for the e6500 is a perfect fit for the e6510.
The one i purchased was from this ebay seller,
eBay My World - sunvalleyus "$18.69 shipped"
They shipped it in a flimsy box and it arrived bent some.
    Nonetheless it still works great.

Thanks for confirming this: ie the same keyboard works for the E6400, E6500, E6410 and E6510.

So which native resolution did you get and why do you despise it?

The E6510 is available with 1920x1080 (FHD), but it's nominally 15.6" diagonal. A quick Web search seems to indicate that's the smallest FHD size that's readily available from any of the manufacturers.
