really, the better question is why? the reason that machines aren't made with that resolution is not a hardware limitation, but a recognition that having 1080p resolution of a device the size of your thumb would be entirely useless. i exaggerate, clearly -- but what's your thinking?

    Question about Resolution

    My configuration:

    Windows 7 64bith Pro.
    i5 520 M
    Intel HD graphics
    1920X1080

Hi forum, I have a question about resolution. Recently I had an issue with the screen and sent my system to Dell Service Depot and at the same time upgraded my screen from 1366X768 to 1920X1080.

The issue I am facing is that when I try to change the resolution I only see following options

    • 1920X1080
    • 1280X1024
    • 1024X786
    • 800X600

I do not see 1600X900 and 1366X768. I want to change my resolution from 1920X1080 to 1600X900 but that option is not available. Please advise if this is normal behavior. If not please advise what can I do to select 1600X900.

I also see that my monitor is listed as "Generic PnP Monitor" in the Device Manager.

    Thanks!

I got my E6510 from the Outlet store today. It's pristine in every way. The first boot was on August 5th.

I just had a small niggle. When I drained the battery after the first full charge and restarted the laptop, the touchpad started going completely haywire.

I downloaded the latest alps drivers from the dell website and restarted and it's all good now. But I hope this touchpad issue isn't a permanent deal.

Are there any touchpad diagnostics etc? I can see it's not a hardware issue but is there any way to make sure?

Go to the Advanced Settings > Monitor and deselect "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display. If your problem is that you want to make everything bigger then you should keep to the native resolution (1920 x 1080) and use the display scaling. You can get there by right-clicking on the desktop, select Personalize and then selecting Display near the bottom left corner of the Personalise window. The standard options are 100%, 125% and 150%.

Also make sure you are running the latest BIOS. It includes a fix for a touchpad related issue.

There are diagnostics in the BIOS (press F12 at the BIOS screen to get a menu) and you can download a more thorough diagnostics utility.

John - Does that mean FHD screen is not capable of 1600X900 and the only option after FHD is 1280X1024?

This is a serious design flaw with Dell's FHD because 1280X1024 gets skewed because of the aspect ratio.

I didn't bother with it further because it worked fine after the touchpad driver update. I'll check tonight to see if I have the latest BIOS. Thanks for the heads up.

In fact I'll go through all software updates available.

i'm also running win7 32 bit, and planning to install win7 64 bit. I know you can use the same license for either, I'm just wondering where to get the win7 64bit download. I have the disk for the 32 bit (does it also include the 64bit on the same disk?). I don't know cos I haven't opened the sealed CD sleeve yet.

Any LCD display only works properly at its native resolution. Anything else requires interpolation and the display goes fuzzy. However, as already noted, the Intel GPU driver allows a user to define other resolutions and perhaps the other GPUs have a similar facility. However, I would recommend that you try the Windows display scaling options. This will give you bigger text without losing the sharpness.

    AHHHH CRAP

Fedex just brought the replacement for unit #1 that has the persistent freezing problem. This time got a better model, one that seems to work, only one problem...dam screen (the LCD not the bezel) has a fraction of an inch diagonal scratch (gouge) on it on the bottom about where the "ON" button is (the one next to the power button). Thought originally it might've been a hair on the screen, but it's definitely a scratch. Granted it's not "glaring" like a bunch of dead pixels but it isn't a superficial scratch and it's annoying that it's "there" on what's supposed to be something that's tested. Don't they check for these things, and do I have any recourse in this case?
