I agree with John. Already, dual core is all you really need, even if you played games (games are more GPU intensive than CPU, in any case), especially on a laptop where minimizing power consumption is important. I would go with 580M, also it would mean, most likely, less heat.

I would wait next generation mobile chips before going all in with such power, as most likely it will consume much less power (and less heat).

That is true. It is all pretty confusing because both the processors easily do what I ask of them right now. Let's see where it goes from here.

Thank you for all the help. :) I'll post an update on my decision (if anyone cares :p).

Looks like another case of mixed-up Dell. Last night I requested 64-bit replacement media for Windows 7 (I have 32 bit now) via their support form. This morning I get an email indicating that I will be receiving Windows Vista 32b (well that ain't right). Do a chat with a rep this morning and she indicated that could only send what was on the computer (Vista according to their records--again, hmmm). I indicated that I had a Windows 7 key label on the computer along with the original OEM Windows 7 media (albeit 32 bit) and could she go and double-check. She must've went and conferred with supervisor for awhile but she came back and said they would send 64-bit Windows 7 as I'd requested. YAY! Supposed to receive in a couple of days. Guess persistance pays off.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks now and so far so good. The system is as I excepted so far.

Quick question: How dangerous really is it for guys to use their notebook as a laptop? I know it's been said if you plan on having children you might want to avoid it, but it's sooo much more comfortable on the lap that I thought I'd ask for clarification.

    @Captain_Mischief,

Talk to your physician. My understanding is that raised temperatures reduce sperm count.

However, if you don't have a rigid surface under the notebook, then you're risking it overheating because its air intake vents probably are being blocked. The E6510 has the inlets for cool air on the bottom.

I usually keep a cooler pad under the laptop when I want to use it on the lap. I don't even turn the fan on, just leave the mat underneath it to enable circulation.

It's an overstated potential risk. If this is to be believed then a hot bath is also a hazard, but the key message in that article is that any damage is temporary.

Also, when I use a laptop on my lap, it is actually on my knees so that I can comfortably use the keyboard.

Funny story, the 6410 I told Dell to cancel and which they said they did, the one they decided was fit as a replacement for my 6510 without asking me or telling me that they've ordered it, just shipped. It'll be here Tuesday. What say guys? Should I just keep them both and tell Dell that it's only fair for all the trouble I have to put up with?

This Thursday will be a month from my original purchase date!

Your balls are outside your body in a temperature controlled environment (can bring them closer to the body or away automatically) for a reason. Having something hot on your laptop, will easily rise that area warmer then your internal body temperature, hence why it's dangerous. Only girls can do put a laptop on there lap... sorry. Hot baths is indeed not good. But, the good news is that you can while standing, if that makes you feel better.

Purchased an E6510 during a 25% off deal.
The laptop I received was pretty banged-up. I called Dell & they said send it back & they'd replace it with a comparable one.
The one they sent had an upgraded CPU (from 520M to 540M), upgraded HDD (from 160GB to 250GB), upgraded memory (from 1066 to 1333MHz) & upgraded OS (from Vista to Win 7). The only problem was it had a DVD-ROM instead of a DVD-R/W. They won't let me swap out the optical drives, stating it'd void the warranty, even though they're made to swap out easily.
Should I just keep the upgraded replacement & find a DVD-R/W on my own? If so, i've seen several available on eBay, albeit different model #'s. Do I need to look for a certain model #, or are there multiple model #'s that are compatible?
Am I being too picky about this?
