What they really mean is that the warranty will be voided FOR the optical drive. Meaning, that Dell won't cover your DVD-burner with the warranty of the laptop. If you buy a Dell DVD-burner from Dell, to have the same matching color and size, it will follow a different warranty (1 year) than your laptop.

In 2 years I have my laptop, I only used my burner once. I usually use USB memory sticks. I have myself a very high speed 8GB memory stick, which suffice me (Windows 7 64-bit fits in it, and can install it in 7min).

You need a 9.5mm thick optical drive with SATA interface. My first look at ebay found only two but I'm sure some different keywords would find more (here are some more - the burner is the same as for the E6400 / E6500).

If I connect external hard drive to eSATA can I boot from it instead of internal hard drive?

Looks like I can boot from USB but I am not sure about eSATA.

    THX!

Yes, it will boot from the external eSATA drive.

The eSATA drive/port must be enabled in the BIOS.

I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. You definetly got a good upgrade there and I'm sure you can find some optical drives pretty cheap.

On my replacement case, they are finally sending me a replacement E6510.

I have doubt regarding the screen. The one I have said WLED FHD screen, but this one just says FHD. Does Dell sell the E6510 without the WLED as well? Or are all of them the WLED? I guess I can wait to find out, but if anyone knows, I'd appreciate it.

They have changed a few things:

+ DVD RW instead of ROM
+ vPro (although pretty useless for me, it's an added value.)
+ Latitude ON Reader (ditto, pretty useless)

    - Backlit keyboard downgraded to Unlit. This is a major annoyance for me.

All in all I'm happy but will probably have to swap out the keyboard.

Hope this laptop doesn't have any problems. My patience with Dell is all done.

And then press F12 at the BIOS screen to get a boot device menu.

Yes, eSATA device is enabled in Bios, however in Bios under Boot Sequence there is no eSATA, only USB (and HDD and Diskette and DVD) .

So USB also assumes eSATA, and it will boot from eSATA in sequence that set up for USB?

    Thanks guys

How difficult is it to swap out a keyboard? How expensive are backlit keyboards? If a latitude isn't sold with a backlit keyboard, are they still set up for one?

About $15-20 on ebay and fairly easy to swap.
