I understand the motherboard has the CPU and video integrated; you must select a different motherboard to change the CPU or video.

The service manual shows that the CPU is removable. Intel's data shows that both the i7 720QM and the i7 620M use the PGA988 socket so the QM will fit into the dual core board.

I wonder if the difference in the PCI bus support is controlled by the memory controller (which is in the CPU package) in the same way as the quad core lets the RAM run at 133MHz while the dual core CPUs limit the RAM to 1066MHz. I'm sure that Dell would prefer to not have two different system boards in their inventory unless really necessary. I'm sure that one or more E6510 owners have tried the swap and can tell us the answer.

I didn't install anything for the keyboard. It seems it detects it and works fine. Some component probably has those drivers built in. That, or some other driver I installed inevitably ended up helping the backlighting. It just worked right out of the box. I installed it, turned the computer on and that's that.

It even cycles through the "Auto/On/Off" modes.

So yeah, I don't have Dell Control Point or any of their Applications that came initially with the laptop. I did a clean install of windows 7 64 bit and started from scratch and even then it handled the backlighting.

with the system device manager software you should gain timer/time out, resume on your choice of input control as well for the back-lit keyboard

^ I don't have that software installed and the keyboard works in all three modes : ON/OFF/AUTO.

OK but Dell ControlPoint System Manager also allows you to set the backlight brightness and timeout.

Browser and cookies issue. Use a standard browser, allow cookies, purge any corrupted cookies, and then don't select 'Dell download manager'... just download the file you want.
