@weegie - what are your idle temps on the CPU, GPU & Northbridge, and what are the max load temps on the CPU, GPU & Northbridge after a 3DMark 05 run?

Also, what temperatures on the CPU/GPU/Northbridge makes the fan kick on under BIOS A13?

Would appreciate HW Monitor temps + BIOS A13, thx.

    Here're mine just after a 3DMark 06 run from on x64 Vista -

Just rolled to A12 from 13.

Here you can see the temps, the computer has been on for 3-4 days straight. Surfing and watching movies etc. and the fan never kicked in under bios 13. You can see the temperatures were pretty high and the fan kicked in only during some heavy things.

Looks like your CPU & Northbridge were being loaded; the GPU seems barely above idle temps.
But none of the above are really extraordinary - instead, I'd be looking into your HDD temps.

Where can I find the older bios (like the A02)?

@ofelas....my long time precision cohort from many years back on nbf:D

This was after running 1024 prime and then 3dmark06.

These are pretty much idle temps on A13,GPU hit's 65degC the fan will come on.....or if the cpu reaches 61degC....which ever's first, northbridge tend's to be following after either processor's and doesn't seem to be the initial trigger for the fan from what I can make out, however when running wprime, the NB hit 81 degC and then the fan ramped up to the next speed so it obviously has some input,as that was the only temp climbing consistently....when the fan speed up,the temps dropped around 5deg.

This sort of confirm's what I was saying earlier about this bios being a bit relaxed on fan usage.
On A02 the GPU only need's to hit 55deg or the cpu 50deg to set the fan going....plus use's higher fan speed's at much lower temp's....65 deg is a bit hot imo for using the notebook on my lap,as you can feel the heat sinking into the bottom cover plate where my leg is.

I do really like the way A13 slow's the fan's down as soon
as the load come's off though, where A02 keep's them going
at high speed for a very long time....pretty much to below
    idle temp's.
A happy medium between the two bios version's would be good for me.....what say you?

Don't really have an opinion lexi,as I own neither  but I don't think there's one cross platform game i've really liked yet, they seem to have trouble making console game's look and perform well on the pc.

First cut the screenshot a bit smaller please. i got a 1680px wide and im still scrolling :)

First i have to say: The cooling system works. when im on load my fan is on 5k rpm and when i stop the load (even tabbing out a game on desktop) my fan throttles to 3k rpm.

So im With you - i wanna know if the bios checks the CPU/GPU load and switches because of load or if it in fact switches because of temperatures.

Dont have a PS3 either, dont even like the GTA series. i just read because i got many requests about GTA4 on notebooks in my "home-forum"

@weegie - yeah really...between the both of us we must have owned & improved every model of Precision laptop out there.
My thoughts exactly as far as thermals go - somewhere in between the extremes as far as fan start would be good.
But, seeing as I barely use the laptop on my lap, the quietness is a blessing - for now.
I went whole hog & copper modded the Northbridge as well as the GPU - it really ensures no downclocking under load, and it's nice when all the components never exceed 76 degrees - except the GPU, as I didn't have a large enough copper shim, and the heatsink only makes partial contact - so the copper mod on my GPU is really to ensure full contact more than anything else.
