Not necessarily christoph,I took my screenshot, after running wprime 1024 and then 3dmark06,but when the fan had stopped running or soon afterward's.

On bios A13 under light load, mine would probably be similar because the fan won't even turn on until the cpu reaches 61 degC or 65 on the GPU....which ever is first.
When I ran wprime on A13 the fan spent probably 95% of the time off which imo is impressive, but basically ruining the cool running advantage of the P series....unless you love no fan noise.

If you try one of the older bios's,I think you will find it very different....but the fan will come on a lot more often because the trip point's are around 10 degC lower.

Personally don't mind having the fan run on slow more often to have a cooler notebook....it still doesn't run very often anyway on the other bios's

ofelas, or anyone else who has modded their boxes with copper shims,

Would you guys mind posting some pics of your setup? Our notebook thermal engineers would like to see how you guys are adding the shims, and would like to possibly provide feedback. Thanks in advance.

Thank you, I really appreciate this.
An additional information: I, personally, wouldn't even mind paying some more money if a Dell technician came and replaced the cooling system of my M4400 with something better, or added a shim of copper to it or something like that. Please pass on this information, thank you.

Most definitely. I have a Latitude E6400 and plan to call Dell next week about this. I already called Dell Finland and mentioned my GPU going up to 102 degrees under gaming (I have since tuned down all graphics options and manage to stay under 99), and all they offered to do was replace the motherboard, which has the side effect of replacing the integrated GPU. However, since most other users have idle temperatures similar to mine, I refused. This is my work laptop and I cannot risk replacing parts just like that.

I would be willing to pay for one of these "copper mods" if it wouldn't void my warranty.

It would surely void the warranty if it could be proven that the shims caused any damage to the system. I think our main concern is regarding excessive die pressure the shim might invoke. It's not a mod that we would endorse or provide, but we are nonetheless interested to see what folks are doing with shims.

Lol....letting us be the testers eh? :p

While we're on the subject anyway....does applying AS5 or another paste void warranty? While done correctly ofcourse and not the whole gpu smeared in grease ;)

I am hesitating to do this. On one hand, I trust my skill to do this properly without damaging the system. I have reapplied thermal paste in the past, and with the multiple guides popping up here at NBR (one E6400 user is going to post one this weekend) and the detailed Dell manual I should have no problem.

However, this would be a great excuse for Dell to blame any and all future problems of the laptop on this. I must say that Dell's support here in Finland has been fantastic, they even fixed a broken latch even though I said I wasn't sure if it was there from the start (although I honestly don't recall breaking anything). So there is some hope.

Bill, if you work at Dell (your name implies so), what would you recommend? Would you say I am risking something? Or can I assume that if I do it properly I will have no problem?

In looking at the M4400 gpu air vents, it seems to me that this is very small (as compared to some other notebooks). I am wondering if Dell made the opening of this vent grill much larger, whether this would improve the cooling ability a bit. Just a thought.

What kind of results have you had under A12? Seems to be rather balanced for me... starts fan at more reasonable temps than A13, slows fan after load... does stay on for a while, but not long like A02.

After playing around a bit, my vote def goes to A12.

Didn't find A12 greatly different from any of the other's tbh WestDev,supposedly all they did in this regard was change the midrange fan speed.....A13 is the only one I've really noticed a big difference with.
