Im reading these from the device manager:

    NVIDIA driver 7.15.11.7688

Then Im using some basic Microsoft audio drivers that vista installed (the ones from the Dell site gave me crackling audio, now all is smooth so I dont want to update)
    High Definition Audio Device 6.0.6000.16386

Unless you're specifically using CATIA, I'd use video driver version A05.

Also, audio driver A06 seems a lot better than the previous Dell versions.

Lastly, update to BIOS A13 if you haven't already.

Thanks Ofelas. Im on A13 as of yesterday and fan noise is way down! Very happy!

Im happy with the audio and video performance right now so in recards to that Im a bit worried about updating. Do you think the drivers you mention might relieve the docking freeze problem?

Sami the reason I thought the audio/video driver update would help, is that I'm using those versions, and I have no docking-freezing issues.

Of course, it may be related to other software, but the drivers would be a good place to start.

Also - I'm using the latest version of the Dell System Software released a fews days back, as well as the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (which includes the driver) from the Intel site - version 8.8.

    Hope that helps.

Ok cool! I will give those a go and see what happens.

A few questions! (I'm not extremely tech savvy so bear in mind)

Where do I find the info on which system software Im using?

Can I roll back the audio drivers easily in the device manager if they seem to not work ok?

    Thanks!!!

Ok, one question as I investigated the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. I think my system is running in ATA mode.

A month ago or so I when I had the crackling problems and was installing some drivers my computer would not boot. I called Dell and they told me to go to Bios to change some of these settings and I ended up having to re-install Vista because of these changes (yeah, I know...).

Due to this I never installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and I havent had crackling audio since.

I dont know if this is related but...

    It's certainly possible...
Asking you to run in ATA mode was not very sound advice; AHCI or IRRT modes give you some added functionality over ATA.
There is an excellent guide on how to switch modes from within Windows on this forum - it is by MiB, if you follow the steps outlined, you should be able to switch back to AHCI or IRRT mode.
IRRT is the default (which I haven't had a problem with) but there are those who have switched to AHCI based on their results & issues.
Either way, your system was made for AHCI & IRRT, especialy under Vista.

Dell's advice was to update the system software to 6.2.1 (A02) but it made no difference. I'm using BIOS A13 and audio 6.10.0.6159 (A06), but my M4400 still locks up 80% of the time when I dock it into the port replicator. I'm getting to the point now that I'm going to have to stop using the port replicator until Dell fix it.
