NFH, does it happen even if you havent left the computer idle just before docking?

    What are your computer specs?

Yes, it makes no difference what I've been doing just beforehand.

    2.53GHz, 250GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Vista Ultimate 32-bit, webcam, non-lit keyboard, webcam, WUXGA (1920x1200)

I have a potential partial solution. By disabling the Intel Management and Security Status, the M4400 crashes on docking around 20% of occasions instead of the 95% of occasions previously. This could be coincidence, but I've definitely noticed an improvement.

I've tried reformatting and reinstalling Windows, and I still get this around 20% of the times that I dock the laptop.

Shortly after my posts above, I got Dell to replace my E-Port Plus, which cured the problem for many months. However, recently it started happening again - around 80% of times I dock the M4400. So I asked Dell to replace the E-Port Plus again, which they did. It solved it for a few days but it has started freezing again on docking around 80% of the time. I'm wondering whether it's something to do with the connectors on the M4400? Can anyone shed any light on this issue?

Well I just registered because I wanted to say I was having the same problem. Also have it with my old M65 sometimes. It really sucks and I have just gotten used ot dealing with it. Mine is a corporate laptop, so IT will be even more clueless than Dell, force me to re-install everything, and when it doesn't solve the problem they will begin systematically replacing everything, and finally give up.

So I just have gotten used to this, but I think this is nuts that Dell has this problem and has not looked in to it more. Has anyone raised the issue in the Dell forums?

This problem was occurring around once per month until I upgraded to Windows 7. Then it stopped completely for around 6 months. Now it is happening 90% of occasions that I dock my M4400 and even happened once when undocking. Has anyone diagnosed the cause of this yet?
