Don't worry about whats on the invoice. What you selected on the configurator is what you'll get.

Mine went into production today! Maybe I'll get lucky and get it before 6/1.

Wow, +500 for the nvidia 2k, they really are trading on their market popularity:eek: .

Should be a nice cool notebook with separate fans and midrange GPU's.

I wonder if newmodeUS will manage to make a caddy for this model, the optical drive front plate looks a much thinner height on the M4600, according to the dell website, the main drive has tool less removal

Anyone with some inside news on the M6600 IPS panel? I'm still hoping for May, but I have my doubts :)

I'm currently looking at the M4600 and the M6600 to replace my old laptop (main use: software development). More precisely, I'm interested by the following configurations (other details aren't relevant):

    M4600:
    • Intel® Core™ I7-2720QM (2.20GHz ,6MB cache ,Quad Core™)
    • FirePro M5950 Mobility Pro Graphics with 1GB GDDR5 (TDP = 25W)
    • 15.6in Full High Definition (1920X1080) WLED LCD Panel

    M6600:
    • Intel® Core™ I7-2720QM (2.20GHz ,6MB cache ,Quad Core™)
    • AMD FirePro M8900 Mobility Pro Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 (TDP = 75W)
    • 17.3" UltraSharp™ FHD(1920x1080) Wide View Anti-Glare LED-backlit with Premium Panel Guarantee

    I'm really hesitating.

First, I'm wondering if 1920X1080 makes any sense on a 15.6in laptop. On the other hand, the other option is 1366X768 which seems too low for me (my current laptop is an old D820 laptop, 15.4 inches, 1680x1050 and I'm pretty happy with this resolution). Do you have any opinion on this?

Depending on the answer to the above question, I might decide to go for a 17.3in (mobility is not a concern). However, in that case, I'm worried by the extra heat and the durability of the internal components due to the extra power required by the graphic card. Again, do you have any opinion on this?

Note that in both cases, I'm planning to use an external display if this matters.

Thanks in advance for your valuable inputs.

If you have good vision or require the real estate, get the FHD option. If you're not using the internal screen but only the external screen and want to save money, consider the HD option. The GPU in the 17" is much more powerful but it's a waste if you aren't going to need it, so what will you do on your laptop?

Then go with 1366x768 so you can save money to invest in a better cpu (which is more useful for software development than the gpu [unless you use CUDA, which requires a Nvidia gpu]).
Though, seeing that you don't really need the power of a workstation, why don't you buy a Dell Vostro with the best cpu and be set with it?

My vision is ok but I want to keep it ok :)

My main use: programming (see also this previous question), which is why I like to have much place at the screen. And this applies even if I'll be using an external screen.

1920x1080 on a 17.3in seems to be the ideal resolution (127 DPI which is very close to the 128.6 DPI I currently have) but the GPU would be indeed a waste.

I think I'll go check in some shop how 1920x1080 on 15.6in (141 DPI) feels.

But 1600x900 on a 15.6 (117 DPI) might be a good compromise. Need to check if it would be available on the M4600 (it isn't with the online configurator for France).

    Thanks.

Honestly, I can't imagine choosing 1366x768 after my 1680x1050 experience. And better than a i7-2720QM is just too expensive, I'll stick with this CPU regardless of the money I could save elsewhere.

Second, I want a matte screen (and also docking support) which means Latitude or Precision.

Third, I don't want a NVIDIA GPU because of Optimus and the lack of Linux support (and I don't need CUDA).

    That's why I'm considering a Precision.

Wait a moment, weren't the nvidia cards the ones with the best linux support?

The docking station requiement sets the Vostro apart.
Try contacting a Dell rep an see if it's possible to order a 1600x900 m6600 without video card (the SB processors already have the gpu integrated).
As an alternative, it seems the Dell Latitude E5520/E6520 laptops ship without video cards (but a 1366x768 screen), so those could be a choice.
