earlier for a moment I was thinking even about Asus with 120 Hz screen (good !!!), but G74 is much louder than G73 (produces very annoying sounds in idle) and cleaning fans requires full disassembly produce in both of them. Additionally they can throttle too...

for now - do we have other options ?

I think the Asus is mostly plastic inside.

Thank you for your answer. I think I will try software RAID option and see how good it performs.

...but it's probably the only one with 120 Hz/matt/3D and a little more powerfull graphic card.

Could a Quadro 2000 or 3000 be installed on the ASUS, or is the power supply too small? I don't know the specs on the ASUS, but what about creating a hybrid?

Up until recently I had been looking at getting a M6600, but after reading some of the horror stories about service and the screen issues, I am really having second thoughts.

I refuse to drop $2800+ for a new laptop and have to fight it every step of the way.

I have an old Gateway M-6862 that is going on 5 years old and have NEVER had a problem with any components, and I use it every day for both work and gaming.

It is showing its age due to the HD2600 video card (though I have soft modded it to a FireGl 3400), but 4GB of ram and a 2Ghz dual core are starting to lag running Solidworks and Inventor.

I want a 17"+ screen but HP is too expensive for the specs, Dell is really turning me off with their service and quality, and Lenovo doesn't even have a 17"+ in a workstation replacement.

So what do I do? Buy a gaming system with and compromise on video clarity in renderings or try to build some hybrid?

I received my replacement M6600 today. It is a new machine, not refurbished. It is identical to my original machine other than the LCD panel, which is an LG as opposed to the AUO in my original M6600.

My original issue is gone, which was the lack of video output when the laptop was cold. The new issue is the flickering on low brightness. I feel I must define 'flicker' in my context. Flicker means the backlight completely cuts out for a very short amount of time while on some of the lower brightness settings every 5-10 seconds. It already has the newest bios, A07.

Other than that one issue it seems fine. I think I may swap the AUO panel in my original laptop with the LG panel in the new one before I ship it back. The only issue with my original AUO panel is one small hotspot which is slightly brighter than the rest of the display, maybe the size of a pinhead, in the upper right quadrant of the display. I wouldn't mind the LG panel if I was confident they would resolve the flickering issue.

Does anyone else have any input? I don't think they track the individual panel part numbers, so it should be ok.

On a different topic, has anyone swapped in a camera and bezel into a mic only version? Has anyone swapped in a bdrom/bdrw into a laptop with a slot load dvd-rw?

Looks like the flickering is common with the LG. They must be getting hundreds of complaints. Mine had it, flashed to A07 bios, it went away, it came back a few days later, flashed bios again and it's gone, so far anyway. Strange stuff indeed.

Let us know what you think of the AUO compared to the LG, since you have both right now,
