Aikimox (above post) has a very sound strategy, although didn't mention sleep.
The only time I shutdown is when moving locations and only because SSD is so fast, otherwise timer sleep.
Cold starting uses more energy than waking from sleep and is hardest on the system just like in water plumbing valves/joints. And I'll mention lost productivity from getting tasks reloaded.

Surely know one unplugs every appliance/device at home when not in use.
Best thing to do is vote/elect politicians that will accommodate more power plants for cheaper energy.

    Yes, I did say that!

Have you tried uninstalling any bluetooth and wireless software and drivers then doing a cold start and then reinstall wireless first then bluetooth software?
Make sure to keep that wireless switch on if you try this.

    Edit Add:

Just checked BIOS, here's my settings:
    System Configuration > Integrated Nic=Enabled w/PXE, > Misc Devices/FastBoot=Thorough
Wireless > Wireless Device Switch=All Checked, Wireless Device Enable=All Checked

You're correct about BIOS. I'm not sure what the problem could be other than you received two bad ones - in a row. I assume you are adding it to a machine that didn't have one to begin with.

The last thing to try would be Load defaults in BIOS, make any needed adjustments such as AHCI, save and use power button to shutdown. Cold start to BIOS and see if that works. You also might try reflashing with the latest BIOS with the card in - get a second opinion on that one though.

Yes, I meant sleep as well. Totally agree regarding cold starts. Unless absolutely necessary, I'd rather avoid turning the laptop off. After installing a server OS on my W510, there's no need to tweak anything. Hibernate/Sleep is disabled by default and the system always prompts you for a reason for shutdown/restart. :)
