No, you can't just swap the screen. There are a few places earlier in this thread with the specific parts list. You will need a new display, top panel enclosure (slightly thicker), interposer board, and two cables (motherboard->interposer and interposer->display).

In other words - get the IPS from Dell and save the hassle as it's not gonna be cheaper or easier to DIY.

Posting fix in case this helps someone else.

Brand new M6600 with IPS panel, Quadro 4000M, BIOS rev A09, fully updated Win7-x64, and current Dell drivers. When laptop display automatically turned off due to idle time, the display would not resume on keyboard activity. The backlight would come back on, but the actual display would be blank. Various combinations of Fn-F8 and/or entering/exiting sleep mode would get display back. Tried latest Nvidia drivers (needed for OpenCL anyway) but did not work.

Finally got it working by disabling advanced C-States in BIOS under Performance section. Will cause (unknown) reduction in power savings, but display behaves correctly now.

Also thanks for all the great info in this thread and several others on this forum. Helped us decide to choose a loaded Dell M6600. [Hint to Dell - customers do research what to buy based on user communities llike this!]

Is there any way to control the fans on the M6600? If I use it on batteries on my lap it stops the fans and it stays at about 65 degrees on the CPU. I want to turn on the fans so it can be cooler.

...but the beauty of this excellent laptop is its capability to run absolutely quiet!

Still, I would never use it on my lap for any time longer than a couple of minutes....

i want to hook my laptop up to the external monitor but at the same time have the option of using it away from the desk aswell without having to take out/put in wires every time. is this what an e-port replicator is used for? and i have noticed that there is an regular model and and advanced, will they both effectively do the same job. and besides getting an eport is there any other way to achieve my goal?

Actually the e-port regular & advance just different in the availability of extra ports only.. you still need to do the docking to it, means that the notebook no longer mobile :( still there are wifi display option with wifi enable monitor or display tv yet the resolution might be limited thou..:D

so just to clarify the eport works like this - you port the monitor, keyboard, mouse wires into the eport and you dock/undock the laptop as you wish. and as soon as you dock the laptop all the (9monitor,keyboard,mouse) connections start automatically?
