The drive was cloned from the factory drive with a run thru windows update and the available Dell driver updates.

Okay, can anyone help me with making an image to move windows over to my new drive? Should I be doing a clone or just use windows to make the image?

If you want the drive to be bootable, you have to make a clone. I suggest you use Acronis, you have to pay for it, but it's pretty good. If you want a free alternative, you can always align the SSD manually using diskpart and clone using a clonezilla live disc or live usb.

Depending on the SSD, the manufacturer might have a cloning tool available for download on their website. Intel does this, Crucial and Samsung do not, I don't really know for other manufacturers.

Windows actually has a built-in imaging tool; if you use the built-in backup tools with the "System image" function (save it to an external hard drive), you can boot from a Windows install DVD to restore it onto a different drive. It's not as straightforward as Acronis TrueImage and it has the caveat that it will not restore to a drive smaller than the one you originally imaged.

True, one NBR member actually did it and detailed the procedure somewhat some time ago, but the thread will be hard to find.

From what you've told me the Windows image option wont work for me as I'm trying to move the OS from the 320GB HDD to the 128GB Samsung SSD. And I really do not want to pay for new software to do this.

Here is what i would do:

Move all your libraries and data to an external (temporarily), uninstall any program you do not want to be on the SSD and shrink the windows partition to the size of the SSD. Then you can clone using a free tool.

    Here's a thought:

    • Check if the mfr. of SSD or HDD provides a free software.
    • Shrink the OS partition you have to 128Gb for Windows image conformity.
Otherwise a reimage will likely be required.

EDIT: @tijo beat me to it :)

Thanks for advice. The drive was cloned with pro software which supposedly deals with that automatically. That said, mushkin tech support had me upgrade Intel rst to newer version. So far so good. Even recovered from a hibernation cycle. A will see over the next day or so. If it id not fixed I have some other suggestions to try and then I will do a you suggest. if the update of rst did fix it, I will report on it or any solution that works.
    Thanks again.
