    Thanks Scott.
No worries, I've learned a thing or two about rushing into things - don't do it on the production machine, and haven't.

I may give it a try later on and I'll let you know the outcome. I came to the same conclusion. Hardware wouldn't be able to accept instructions from two different drivers and applications at the same time.

Kind of like someone reaching over and grabbing the steering wheel of a car. Fail.

What the best port to get good audio out of the M6600, 3.5mm or USB Headset?

Ok, just for an update, the Courion Direct CP software apparently provides a Password Reset tile on the logon screen. If you click "switch user" at the domain logon screen after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon you get 3 tiles: "other user" (takes you back to domain logon screen), password reset (asks you your pre-registered security question and resets password), and fingerprint logon.

Short version, the Courion software provides password reset functionality at the Windows 7 logon screen if you forgot your password.

So the Courion software provides the reset tile, the Dell software provides the fingerprint tile. When they tried the DDP software, it worked but caused the Courion reset tile to disappear. Ditto for the WBF.

A good USB DAC/AMP and a decent pair of headphones. :p Ok, to be a bit more precise, it really depends whether the DAC in the USB headset is better than the one you have onboard and the overall quality of the headsets you're considering. Interference between the onboard audio and the 3.5mm jack is also something to consider (i don't think it'll be a problem in the M6600, but i don't own one so i can't guarantee anything).

The most important question would be: Are you planning to get a headset for calls and/or gaming or you're planning to listen to music a lot and you'd like good sound quality?

    Gaming and Ventrilo mostly.

Does the new Dock with the USB 3.0 ports work with the M6600 too? It just says its for the M6700 only.

I'm trying to figure out how to prevent the display from going full bright all the time. I keep adjusting it down around halfway and it keeps jumping up to the max brightness.

If you have premier color app loading - unload it. Also set the app to not load at startup. It's responsible for this behavior.

Edit: Set not to startup before unloading. Caveat, whatever color profile you were using when unloaded will be in force until reloaded and changed, i.e., it will be the new default on startup.

Then, any decent headset will do (USB or wired), if you want to go the extra mile for audiophile headphones and a stand alone mic you can though.

Posting this edit here as new post for back reference.
It provides a little bit more explanation that can be shared amongst all M Precision owners.

Premier Color is primarily an IPS display application though it can be used with other displays. To achieve accurate colors on an IPS display there are brightness levels associated with a color profile such as sRGB or Full RGB or Adobe RGB etc. When an app like Photoshop is loaded the associated color profile like Full RGB that the user wants is loaded with it and stays that way while the app window has the focus. When that changes, say IE is loaded with an sRGB profile then it's in force while its window has the focus. Premier Color is active and changes to the task having the focus.

This behavior is normal and expected, though for general computing use it is annoying hence the need to stop it.

Browsing the internet with anything more than 100% sRGB on an IPS RGBLED display is way too much color to be comfortable for any length of time.

Dell is loading this by default I believe on every M Precision out of the factory indiscriminately of display config.

    Snip:

This sums it up succinctly about why it's included, from the next post down:

Very likely, manufacturers usually have a master image stored on their network and they just have to load it onto the HDD once the laptop has been built. It saves a lot of time that way.
