Sorry but the M4300 never had the X9000 extreme CPU available on it. That CPU was only available on the M6300.

    So what does that mean?
The hardware was messed with? the CPU and possibly the motherboard also?

Did you pull the service tag from bios ?

The service tag in the bios is identical to the one on the bottom of the laptop.

The laptop bootup screen and bios insist it's a D830, while the case and the Dell website say that's a M4300.

I just tried to install the latest M4300 bios, the program declared incompatibility.
The latest D830 bios was installed without a hitch...

What the hell is going on? :eek2:

Was the laptop advertised with a Quadro NVS 140M GPU ?

The specs on the website only said "Nvidia Quadro"
I assumed it would be the FX360M since it's the standard M4300 card.
    Should have asked :)

When you enter the service tag on dell, what GPU does it list in "original config" ?

Seems like the motherboard was changed, observe that the parts spec from dell days it originally had the T9300 CPU.
This in particular means that the laptop is not covered under warranty from dell....

To add to this, I would consider returning the laptop where it came from. The GPU difference is considerable, and no warranty is a bad idea...
