!! - See my post later on in the thread. Much of the information that I posted below is incorrect. The Samsung LTN170CT08-D01 is in fact an 8 bit panel that is made to Dell's specs.

I would not go that far. The RGBLED backlighting does in fact give us the Adobe color gamut. So that part of the marketing is correct. Looking over the individual M6400 and M6500 pages, there is no mention of color depth, only color gamut.

BUT, when you click on the "Help me choose" link when choosing a display on the M6400 and M6500, you get this:

"Amazing color gamut and color depth: Premier color supported Dell PrecisionTM laptops offer over 100% color gamut with true 24-bit color depth which supports over 16.7 million color palettes. The concentrated Red, Green and Blue LED lights generates true deep black in high contrast."

Which means that Dell is promising "true" 24bit (8bit + 8bit + 8bit) on their Precision laptops with RGBLED backlights. This is where they messed up. The color is either true 24 bit or simulated 24 bit.

The only panel that gives true 24 bit color is the LG. I know it used to come with the M6400, not sure about the M6500.

Everyone, there seems to be some confusion as to the panels that are used by Dell in the M6500. Dell has 3 different panels that are used. The WXGA+ WLED panel, the WUXGA WLED panel, and the WUXGA RGB LED panel used in both the silver and E2E on the Covet. The Dell part numbers of these panels are:
    WXGA+ WLED F199R (6 bit panel)
WUXGA WLED 0C751R (6 bit panel)
WUXGA RGB LED 0J501T (8 bit panel)

If you want to know what panel is installed in your M6500 you can run a utility called PC Wizard 2010 from CPUID.com. This will give you the DPN, Dell Part Number. The Samsung ID that everyone is seeing, SEC5443, is just a Samsung idenifier.

    Hope this helps.

I agree and I know two different ways to calibrate the display :
    - by nvidia control panel
    - by windows 7 color management

Finally received my Covet m6500 last night and just finished installing the first wave of office apps and software development tools (Office 2007, VS2008, PrimalScript, etc)

First Impression: This thing is wicked fast! VS2008 opens in less then 2 seconds! Word in 1 second. Visio... 1 second... Project 1 second... mousing through menu option... they just pop (no redraw or HDD induced lag!)

I know alot of this is attributed to the Samsung 128 GB SSD. This is my first SSD system.

Also, as an FYI, the Samsung drive which shipped in my m6500 supports TRIM.

Otherwise, I notice the occassional audio pop mentioned earlier in the thread, along with the strange sRGB and aRGB profiles. But I'm not doing image editing (yet) so I'm keeping it on the default NTSC profile.

Despite the color issues... the LCD screen itself looks better then any lcd I've used before. Its clear -- I don't notice any pixels -- text almost looks like a sheet of illuminated paper, which is good for my purposes. The screen blows the Macbook Pro 17 Unibody out of the water IMHO.

Also I like the multi-touch trackpad, which can mimic the Mac two finger scroll pretty well -- one less thing to think about when switching between my Macbook 17 and this.

Otherwise, it does run pretty cool, fan is quiet (when enabled)... but I haven't taxed the system yet.

... and did I mention being wicked fast? I never worked with a machine this responsive before! This is way computers are supposed to be! :D

Something is wrong. It's been 3 hours and nobody brought up the fake RGBLED display. :D

Ordered the 5600 WWAN Gobi card today. I got it for $107 and free overnight because I complained about the delivery experience described earlier in the thread. I shoulda gotten it free but whatever. I still have 6 months on my verizon contract for the old wwan in my old notebook so kinda had to get it.

ps For those following my experience, went to throw out the shipping boxes today and guess what falls out: 2 DVDs - the Webcam software and the Roxio burner software. lol. It was tucked under all the packing and while this goes back to them not packing the accessories correctly, its kinda funny that I had it all along.
