I suspect the LG screen has a similar "feature," although the sensor may be in a different place, and better shielded from ambient light sources (or better "calibrated" in firmware). It would definitely be worth testing, and hopefully someone with an LG screen can perform similar tests.

amazing!!! These days I discover so many news and terrific stories reg. laptop screen quality.

here http://www.notebookcheck.com/Newseintrag.54+M50bd27ba76c.0.html states that all displays of new 17" HP workstation should be IPS  Can not believe too that true...

But good times to look for new laptop with high-end display for my photo workflow...

    Cheers, Walter

Keith, I googled it and I read somewhere that on TV sets, Samsung is using an ambient light sensor in order to cut down energy consumption. Is your M6500 energy star? Maybe, this "energy star" rating is actually this feature.

So, I just have an idea. Try to check the energy settings (both in BIOS and in Win 7) for any relevant settings, switches or controls. Maybe there is an automatic energy consumption setting that affects the operation of this hidden sensor. Try disabling this or other energy settings and see what happens.

Sorry for not being very specific with this, but I don't own a M6500 yet.

    Hi Walter,

I think the display in the M6500 is still a great quality display, and as long as people are aware of the fact that ambient light sources could cause a shift in the color temperature of their display, I think they can take measures to shield the display from ambient light that might influence the colors. I've had my laptop for almost two months now, and I'm just now "discovering" the issue. Now that I know about it, I will be more careful about what light strikes the display when I'm doing color-critical work.

I think the purpose of the sensor is to keep consistent balance between the RGB channels in the display. The relative strength of the color channels can "drift" over time (and at different power settings) and I suspect this is the manufacturers' method of dynamically balancing the channels. It appears to work well, as long as the sensor is not influenced by ambient light sources...

OK, I tried to update the ATI drivers using the latest update from the Dell site. The updated drivers seemed to install properly; however, now I can't open Catalyst Control Center. The application "tries" to open, but then nothing. I tried opening as administrator, but still nothing. Can anybody that has updated their ATI driver using the Dell package help?

The Dell instructions don't seem to be correct for Win 7 64 bit.

    Keith

Edit: Never mind. Uninstalled in Control Panel and reinstalled and all is well.

Has anyone from EU tried to configure a M6500 on any Dell's european site (e.g. dell.co.uk)? It seems that for some days now it doesn't work at all. It shows the following message:
    - - - - -
Please wait while we retrieve your system information
This should only take a few moments!
    - - - - -
and after a minute or so it shows nothing....

EDIT: I tried on several browsers but the result is the same. Are they updating their configuration setup page?

Well, just imaged over my Primary drive to the new 256g SSD I got from dell. Everything worked great and Acronis has also provided me with a fresh restore point should I ever want to go back to this configuration. What a great program!

Now all I need to do is ensure that the SSD has the latest firmware. Can someone help me with this?
