OK, I've posted a (very low quality) video at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_UQpeI8CRY

Although it is a lousy quality video, it should be sufficient to see the color shift I am talking about.

You can read a more detailed description of this "anomaly" and what I think is causing it at this link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6049650&postcount=2798

    Hi Keith,

That says it all. Nothing like a video to prove your point… :D

You mean to tell me that there is a physical hole, in your Display Panel…

I have never seen anything like that before. Have you called dell about this?

Send it back to dell, and get a Replacement...

Keith, thanks for the clarifying video! This is really, really weird!!! I've never seen anything even close to this effect. Does this also happen when you put a post-it on the right side of the screen?

The sensor is obviously inside the LCD. I'm sure the purpose is to measure the white point of the LCD and dynamically adjust the strength of RGB LEDs in the display to keep them balanced and the "whites" white. It is also obviously affected by ambient light sources.

I demonstrated the affect with sunlight, so that it would be visible on the video. I can also see the affect with less powerful warm light sources, including indirect window light through a white shade (the affect is less noticeable, but still there if you watch for it). I was bothered by a slight green cast to my images in the past, but couldn't pin down the cause. Now I think I know the answer...

I will update BIOS and ATI video drivers and test again. If the issue persists, I suspect the only cure is to use an aftermarket LCD hood to shade the screen from ambient light sources (not a bad idea anyway).

It doesn't happen when I test the right side of the screen. There is obviously an internal sensor on the left side of the LCD that "measures" the white point of the LCD and dynamically adjusts the strength of the RGB LEDs. Good idea, except it can obviously be incorrectly influenced by ambient light sources.

I'll update the BIOS and ATI drivers and test again.

Havoctex I assume you have made your engineering team aware of the
IDT audio driver issues? I just did a fresh install of WindowsXP and as soon as the audio driver was installed the random popping in the speaker started immediately. Almost identical problem in Win7 with the IDT driver.

I am doing a side by side comparison of system performance on the two M6500s using XP and Win7 and and trying to find performance irregularities before I roll out these machines to engineers and finalize images.

Incredible and amazing. I did not think it would be so obvious.

Your problem seems to be hardware related. I mean that there is an hidden sensor in the screen that is not detected in windows. (it's not a bug, it's a feature...) Perhaps it was so hidden that even Havoctex did not know about it. How did you notice the presence of an internal sensor?

At this point you have two solutions:
    - keep a post-it note forever on the top left of your screen (just kidding)
    - find a way to replace samsung panel by LG panel

I have an LG panel but no sunshine at all these days, so somebody has to confirm the problem does not happen on LG screens or you can also pay me a plane ticket to Australia in order to make very complete experiments with sunlight on the screen.

P.S. : Nice pictures on your website.
