You should see the icc files there. Make sure to grab the native and 6500k versions at all 3 brightness levels. Should be 6 files total.

Grab the E-Dock Plus. It comes with an extra 240 watt fat brick power supply and has more ports. I personally run a pair of 24" monitors, but a 24 (1900x1200) and a 20" (1600x1200) work well together too. Make sure the monitors you choose have displayport inputs.

The USB 3.0 external hard drive would not be much faster than one that connects via the e-sata port. The dock (and your laptop) have e-sata ports and those drives may be less expensive than the USB 3.0 versions. I am not sure on that though - have not checked prices.

The calibrator is a tough decision. I would personally wait for the follow up to the Spyder 3 or updated software from Datacolor that better deals with these wide gamut displays. I don't have experience with the ColorMunki, just the Spyder and a couple from Lacie.

This has been replied to twice in this thread. But I'll tell you again,

Yes, it comes with everything you need to mount a second hard drive.

I have the Advanced E-Dock. It's worth pointing out that those DisplayPort outputs (or the one on the laptop) support 30" (2560x1600) DisplayPort equipped displays too, and you can get a Dell-sourced adapter for DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI too if you need DL DVI (although its function is just marginal, as I now know), but it's just about solid now with my old (Dual Link DVI only) Dell 30". You won't have any problem with a DisplayPort equipped monitor as Bokeh says, and the idea of a three screen setup with the M6500 flanked with 30" displays certainly appeals; either graphics card is powerful enough to handle it. The single link DVI ports on the dock will support up to 24" (1920x1200) displays too without a hitch and no need for adapters.

I use the Silicon Power ESata/USB SSD II stick in the ESata socket which does give the advertised 90MB/s read and 50MB/s write speeds. I dare say faster is available on ESata, particularly in an actual drive package rather than a stick per se, and USB 3.0 drives will ultimately go perhaps 3 or just possibly 4 times faster than my stick in real world speeds, but I find the performance seamlessly fast for external drive type purposes, and even fast enough for loading large programs or data files without perceiving a performance deficit.

Bokeh, I've heard about problems with calibrating the wide gamut displays, but what are they in actuality? I haven't found a deficiency; the calibrated and profiled result seems to be consistent, accurate, and subjectively (as well as objectively according to the Spyder 3) a good match for my other displays.

    Paul.

    hi paul,

I've been looking at the pricing from the likes of crucial for comparable/compatible SSD and RAM, its actually not that much different to the dell list price numbers. For me, its even worth it costing 17.5% more as a dell upgrade cost than the open market price if I buy it all in one go (due to uk small companies flat rate vat - you can claim the VAT back if its part of a single item purchase over 2K, but not if its a smaller aftermarket purchase).
If I could buy it with NO ram I might be tempted (put 2x4 in now, then add more later. I certainly won't bother doing a CPU upgrade later, too much hassle.

So really I guess the question is how much (%) will they realisticaly come down from the web price? and does know what time periods the sales folks work in and so when they are most open to "dropping their trousers to get the deal" ? (used to work in a sales-tech role, apologies)

I do network design/testing/simulation/training, I run multiple VMs, and I work as a roving consultant, so it needs to be portable, RDP to home base isn't always an option (hence my interest in this system). Currently using a 2.16ghz dual-core HP with 4GB, and its run out of gas.

Your fantastic VAT being the wildcard here, it really depends on what kind of business account you have set up I think. Ordered mine last week and went through the same process of deciding what to skimp on and what to get off the bat.

Discounts of up to 30% can be had, but I assume this is based on your company's purchase volume and account type. At this rate, the ram and drives were still coming out significantly higher than if I'd pick them up separately from a 3rd party like the egg. Like over a hundred bucks per 8GB of ram higher for instance.

Sounds like you need to do some haggling if that's possible.

I believe these are the six color profiles calibrated by Bokeh for the LG/Nvidia folks....I'm using the 6500K Full Bright Profile:

Please post back on your results.

thanks Bokeh....I'll be moving my external constantly between two laptops so USB 3.0 seems easier. Prices on those drives don't seem all that expensive rightnow. Well, I'll see....cause I need the USB 3 card for my Vostro which a couple of the drives I saw come with.
