"It uses up almost all the memory (8G) for a simply scene"

This comes up again and again. This is just how vista handles memory. It uses almost ALL of your free ram to prefetch data- apps you use a lot, etc.

It's smart enough to free this memory up as your apps start using it.

    Regards,
    Simon

    Hi everyone !

I'm looking into buying a laptop workstation, primarily for CAD (NX5), and also as a DAW. I'm very interested in the M6400.

The config I'd get is :
    Vista Business downgraded to XP
    T9600
    1920*1200 CCFL
    4Gb RAM
    FX2700
    Dell Wireless 1510
    Bluetooth
    No fingerprint
    Integrated camera

All in all, a rather modest config ! Is there anything I should be aware of with it ?

Also, if one of you would be as kind as to check which chipset is used for Firewire, I'd appreciate greatly !

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm looking forward to joining the gang !

    Cheers,

    David

    Hi there,

I'm planning to buy a M6400 to run (exclusively) linux on it, and would like to know if some of you here could give me their feedbacks about their attempts with Ubuntu and its variants, especially regarding the stability of the system (seems that there is quite a lot of problems here) and the hardware support (RAID controller, suspend/hibernate, nvidia proprietary drivers, webcam, mic)

    I also opened a thread @ http:/ /ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6338095 , it might be a better place to discuss linux-related things.

Go to Nvidia's site and get the partner certified drivers. There is apparently a known issue with many of the NVIDIA VISTA 32 and 64 BIT drivers with this product. Having the right driver might help.

From what I have seen, you cannot download FX3700M drivers from NVIDIA's website. The FX3700 listed is the desktop version and is not compatible with the mobile version.

My keyboard had an annoying amount of flex.

    QUICK FIX:

I've lessened it now by putting very slim hyperglide mouse feet under stategic part of the keyboard on the chassis. If I could find something to bridge the two open memory slots under the 'g','h' area of the keyboard it'd be pretty good.

So, for those who are brave enough, go to hyperglide, or suchlike and get some very thin teflon feet. Hopefully mine won't melt or slip off! :D It is very easy to take off the keyboard. In fact, those with flex might be advised to tighten the screw holding the keyboard and chassis in place in case that helps on its own. I'm satisifed with my keyboard now.

This is correct, though some people have some luck installing desktop drivers anyway. Those people are starting with desktop drivers and then modifying the INF file to tell the drivers that they should also support laptop cards. Sometimes they add back in some laptop power saving features too but often you will find some issue with some laptop function not working any more after installing. Also this is not supported by anyone but the people on that site who hack the drivers... You're pretty much on your own. Check out laptopvideo2go.com.

I asked NVidia about this issue and they said one of their long term projects is to remove the need for the OEM to modify drivers, by giving them a standard API for the things they need to be able to do. Then we can all get drivers from NVidia like should be happening.

all my problems with this computer have seemed to stem from this...just got replacement and still have the same issues with the graphics driver crashing when using max, mainly crashes while working on the sub-object level. if you switch the driver in max to use openGL there is no crashing, it only crashes with D3D 9 or D3D 10....not sure why but i am stuck between waiting for a fix or just getting my money back and then re-ordering when they produce a fix.

Why can't you just use opengl?
What features do you lose using D3D 10?

    Regards,
    Simon
