Precision M6400 Owner's Lounge

hey has anybody run super pi benchmarks on the qx9300 covet..? os any softimage xsi users out there..?

 

I have the quad M6400 and will be trying out Maya 2008 later this weekend. Doesn't really matter if you have covet or the base, the processor will give you the most performance for the buck in a 3D app. The video card will help with the opengl view, but the more procs you have the faster the renders will be.

 

Should be hot yeah (hot as in good not in overheating hot), got the software just waiting for the rig to land, not til Dec 9th! Arg that's worse than Alienware.

Anyone with a Covet, post some pix to hold me over

 

i just got mine two days ago....only two complaints. during the first couple reboots, i was having problems with blue screens and errors. this was during the windows update process, so im not sure that was the cause or something else but i downloaded some dell drivers from the website and it stopped having problems. the other complaint it the service rep forgot to add the bluetooth i ordered so no bluetooth for me (allwell, dont really use it that much anyway.) i keep hearing people talk about keyboard flex, there is no flex, not sure what they are talking about. the fans are not loud, i barely even notice them normally, and when they kick in it is not distracting at all. The WXUGA screen (non led) looks good, wish i got the led but they wouldnt put it on the base model. anyway, i give it an 8/10 because the that huge transformer is a pain to take around, it weighs almost as much as the laptop.

 

Found out that my Covet is in the building phase today, and should be in my hands late next week.

 

Don't run the Creative webcam driver from Windows Update. Might cause problems on the M6400.

 

I have an issue with my new M6400 and the Dell 3007WFP monitor.

The laptop does not have a dual link DVI to connect to the monitor. I bought a DisplayPort to DVI adapter from Dell but this did not fix the issue.
That is the laptop can only set the monitor to 1280*800 resolution instead of the regular 2560 * 1600.

I think the issue might be due to tha fact the adapter is DisplayPort to Single link DVI (and not dual link). Unfortunately I can not find a displayport to duallink DVI adapter anywhere.
Moreover the support person at Dell tells me that the 3700M card in the laptop is not capable of driving a dual link DVI connection. I know the card can do it - but I also know that if often depends on the builder to ewnable this or not. Therfore I am not sure that with a proper display port to dual link DVI adapter it would even work.

Anyhow - as a consequences I am returning the laptop tomorrow morning. It is too bad - it was a nice laptop - I waited more than a month for it so I am quite disappointed but such is life...
Just be carreful - if you have a large monitor - this could a problem for you too.

I'm probably sending mine back too. I'm not having much luck.

1) machine arrived with dead pixels.
2) locks up when you try to boot while on the dock station.
3) screen replaced by dell tech. New screen is horrible. Black appears grey. Booted this morning and dead pixels back in the same spot again.
4) Keyboard flex is extremely annoying.

 

I found I had all manner of troubles with the terrible security suite running. Ever since uninstalling that, its been a lot better. My docking station works fine.

I do have an issue - my displayport is completely dead. They wanted to send out a new mobo and video card, but I told them I didn't want a tech disassembling my brand new system, so they are sending out a new system.

I can use the VGA port fine, but the DP does nothing...I have a DP to DVI adapter that works perfectly on a m4400, so its definitely the port.

I have zero keyboard flex...I don't know what the differences here are, if they're subjective or what. But mine is fine.

Did they give you a timeframe for the replacement?
