    @ Jlbrightbill
    call dell and ask for a replacement, they usually deliver on the next day with ups...

    @whistling headphone jack
    some headphones don't whistle when pluged into the vostro headphone jack but some good headphones do... like my sennheissers.. But when there is music playing or even hearing the radio or tv the whistling stops, it's only there when there's no sound output...
    If you have bluetooth stereo headphone there is absolutely no problems...
    If you plug your stereo system, 5.1 system or tv into the vostro headphone there is no disturbing noise either...

    then you'll have to send your laptop in,
    or maybe you can convince dell on the telephone that you can swap the drive yourself and they'll send you one. You'll have to send the bad one back, get it ready so ups takes it when they bring the replacement...

    It's easy enough to get Dell to send you the parts directly.

    And as far as installing an optical drive? Theres ONE screw. I repeat - ONE SCREW you have to take out to replace it...

    Apart from the other 2 notebooks, do you have any other wireless radio devices in your house?

    My wife's Inspiron 1520 (with the Dell wireless card) works fine no matter what but my Vostro 1500 (Intel wireless card) can't detect any signal if I have our wireless video sender switched on.

    Took me ages to figure that one out!

    The 1505 card is no good. I have it and it is disappointing to say the least.

    I have a Vostro 1500 with 1GB RAM

    Problems I found with my Vostro.

    1. Headphones Noise.
    2. When trying to get back on from sleep mode, it takes a lot of time.
    3. Very Expensive Support.

    But I am Quiet happy with my Vostro after kicking Vista and getting XP installed. Although I had a big work around for getting the SATA Hardisk functionality down before I could start Installing XP. :D
