I don't think they typically do but I have little experience with LCDs and laptops in general. My CRT has two lines of dead pixels. It came that way 5 years ago and hasn't changed one bit.

My 1500 is scary quiet. I hear a fan, but it's barely audible.

For the sake of testing this lappy, I will leave it on for a week straight. I'll sleep with it on no problem.

So now that I think about it, my fan really isn't running constently, I can only hear the computer when I'm in my room (quiet) and the TV is off. So the only problem I really have is the battery. Anyone contact dell for a fix? The guy I spoke to seemed to think that I needed a new motherboard... yeah right...

It's time to return my vostro 1500 due to the weird noise from the lcd screen at reduced brightness level. Also the display is kinda grainy and blurry. I am returning mine tomorrow.

Otherwise my vostro runs super fast and almost quiet all the time.

Hoping to get another vostro/ sony vaio FZ soon.

So I guess I'll call Dell in the AM about the Battery, anyone know if it wobbles with the 6 cell as well? It seems odd I couldn't find any reason for it to be wobbling...

    Not true.

On many systems the CPU fan spins down so much that it actually stops spinning completely. A good example is the previous generation AMD CPUs, especially the Venice cores that ran so cool that the motherboard would just slow them down until they're off .. since they aren't needed at that moment in time.

Of course if you put the CPU under load it would start spinning again as part of the feedback loop.

So the main problem for the Vostro 1400 is the fan running constantly, and the wobbly battery.

Can someone test their Vostro 1400 by leaving it idle for a while and see if the fan still runs?

They usually won't get worse. My LCD has had one dead/stuck pixel which is always on green; since we got it like a year ago.

I'm willing to bet you guys with the fan staying on will have it stop in a week or so. It has to do with vista's super-fetch which will constantly run until it learns a profile, also the reason if your hard drive is constantly being used.
